Do You Know God?
Daily Devotional for June 4th
As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. John 17:2-3
To the average believer, salvation or eternal life is defined as having our souls washed or our offenses against God removed. We speak of having our sins forgiven or having escaped eternal judgment in Hell, but very little beyond this. In God’s master plan of salvation, there was much more to Jesus dying on the cross for you besides the cleansing of your sins; it was about restoring all things that were lost through Adam’s fall.
It is touching to know God allowed us to listen in on this prayer between Himself and His Son. As Jesus prayed, He revealed that eternal life is not doing religious things or merely saying a single prayer of salvation then continuing life as usual. It is about relationship; personally knowing God and Jesus Christ. The Pharisees were religious men, but something was deathly wrong. They did not know God. Empty religion means nothing and can do nothing.
The Lord desires to walk with you as He did with Adam. He redeemed you by His blood so that fellowship could be restored and we would be able to enjoy the life we were originally created for; and that is to know God. When we come into fellowship with God, there is no there is nothing in this world that can come close. The presence of God is so real and so sweet, it cannot be denied.
If you were to asked to describe the Christian life to someone, how would you describe it? Would you try to explain religious activities? Instead of asking people “Are you a Christian?” or “Do you attend church?”, the question should be “Do you know God?” Knowing God means everything! Knowing God brings relationship. Knowing God brings blessing. It brings powerful influence in the world. Don’t allow the devil to rob you of what the Christian life is really about. Seek to know God! Ask God to show you Himself. Ask Him to show you who He is! You will never be the same!
