Known in the Spirit

Daily Devotional for April 27th

Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more. Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.  2 Corinthians 5:16-17

One of the greatest things the child of God needs today is discernment.  Without it, we are bound to be deceived.  Our eyes must be opened to what the Holy Spirit is showing us and our ears tuned to what the Spirit is saying.  When it comes to people we worship with or even people in our family, there is a temptation to accept people either as Christians or as led by the Spirit.  This assumption has caused great harm and error.

Even though as Christians we are to accept people with unconditional love, it doesn’t mean we are to acknowledge them as genuine believers.  The Bible teaches us we are to know one another by the Spirit.  In Romans, Paul declares: The Spirit itself will bear witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.  Romans 8:16.  This means that, even though someone says they are a Christian, the Spirit will reveal the truth and will bear witness.  It also means a deceiver cannot hide from the Spirit’s discerning.

How many times has someone attempted to instruct you in spiritual things and there was a witness of the Spirit either confirming their words, or else warning you of their error?  As Paul wrote to the Corinthians, his desire was to make them aware of error that would come and how they could be prepared for it.  He declared God will show unto them if an apostle, preacher, teacher, or anyone else was of God or not.

Jesus said we need to be wise as serpents when we walk through this world.  When we listen to men preach, teach and exhort the Word of God, do we automatically accept them as genuine ministers of God?  The Spirit of God is here to guide us into all truth.  We must learn to know people through the Spirit.  Have you taken council from someone and found it to be a mistake?  Ask the Lord to give you the witness of His Spirit.  No longer can we afford to know men only after the flesh.
