Leaning On a Bruised Reed

Daily Devotional for March 13th

Now, behold, thou trustest upon the staff of this bruised reed, even upon Egypt, on which if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt unto all that trust on him. But if ye say unto me, We trust in the LORD our God: is not that he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away, and hath said to Judah and Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar in Jerusalem? 2 Kings 18:21-22

In this highly modern and technological world, the majority of the world considers any belief in God to be totally foolish and unnecessary. Faith has been delegitimized and has been forced out of minds due to the advancement of science and knowledge. Society taunts that civilization has moved on from what they have called “caveman beliefs.” As a people, we have become too sophisticated to believe such things.

The King of Assyria had a similar response to Israel. He sent word to Israel to, in essence, tell them to not fall into the trap that so many nations had; and that was to trust in something that will fail.  The king of Assyria called this trusting/leaning on a bruised reed.  A bruised reed became an idiom describing how trusting in God was compared to a person leaning upon a broken or damaged cane that could not hold them up.  In other words, Assyria viewed trusting in God as a recipe for disaster for Israel. This is exactly what the devil desires us to think.  But to the contrary, it is only when our faith is anchored in Jesus Christ that victory will come.  When you trust in Him to deliver you, the devil ALWAYS loses.

Do you feel from the world persecution when you witness of God’s grace or faithfulness that they try to convince you that your foolishly trusting as someone who leans on a bruised reed? Take heart today friend.  Only those who don’t know the Lord would say such things.  To all of us who have placed our faith in Christ, there is such a comfort and assurance that this bruised reed will not break.

Many millions of people down through the years have trusted God against the advice of the world. Jesus has proven to be faithful.  God compared to a bruised reed is only the world view of Him.  Every Christian knows God to be sure and stedfast.  You can rest assured that whatever God has promised, He is well able to perform it.  You can take God’s word to the bank.  You can trust Him!  You can lean all of your weight upon Jesus!  Many problems; many weights have been placed upon Jesus down through the years and He hasn’t broken yet!  Trusting in anything else is truly leaning on a bruised reed.
