Untangled From Religion – Daily Devotion for March 5th

Untangled from Religion

Daily Devotional for March 5th

Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees. Matthew 16:7

Our world suffers from many things. At the top of that list of suffering is empty religion.  When we think of the devil’s devices and chains of bondage, we normally think of alcohol, drug addiction, sexual lusts, and occult activities such as séances, etc.  The truth is, the devil has gotten into the business of religion more so than anything else.

Religion is always in competition with Jesus. Religion is always against true followers of Jesus.  Religion is no threat to Satan and his kingdom.  As a matter of fact, it is on his side.  The devil does not care what religion you are, as long as you do not have a genuine relationship with Jesus Christ.  He doesn’t even care how devoted you are to religious things.  His greatest threat is you knowing Jesus and having a relationship with God.

Jesus referred to the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.  He would go on to explain further that leaven was the doctrine of these religious groups.  Leaven, once introduced into bread, does not stop until it has leavened the entire lump of dough.  This is the effects of religion.  It seeks to choke out your relationship with Christ where your focus is no longer on your love for Jesus, but to do things to be seen of men.  Religion focuses on self instead of Jesus.  Always!

There will be a time in your spiritual life when you’ll see the emptiness and the dissatisfaction of doing religious things. Although the Lord has asked us to love people and lend a hand where we are, we must not get tangled up in the religious thinking that has plagued our world.  How do we get free from the tentacles of religion?  By getting our eyes off of ourselves and back on Jesus.
