What Manner of Spirit – Daily Devotion for February 24th

What Manner of Spirit

Daily Devotional for February 24th

And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did?  But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.  Luke 9:54-55

Often times in our walk with the Lord we can misunderstand spiritual things.  Sometimes we even try to justify why we feel the way we do by searching for biblical examples that fit our moods and attitudes.  Our walk with the Lord is so impactful to the world that the devil will attempt to turn your understanding of scripture just to use you to accomplish his will.

Does Satan use God’s people at times?  Yes, sadly he does.  How does he do this?  He does it by turning the scriptures in his favor.  James and John were great men and followed the Lord.  They were originally disciples of John the Baptist.  When these men asked Jesus wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did, they were misusing the authority Jesus gave them.  This comment was more than likely the reason why they were called sons of thunder.

In the heat of the moment, we can allow an influence of another spirit to take control of us.  Although a spirit cannot possess a believer who trusts and lives for the Lord, demonic spirits can affect and influence us.  These two brothers had just gone into a village to prepare for Jesus’ last days.  The Samaritans did not receive the disciples of Jesus.  You and I will be misunderstood, mocked, persecuted and maybe even put to death.  This does not give us reason to ask God to send fire down to consume them.  We must live with God’s love in our hearts.

Jesus did not come to destroy men, but to save them.  We must not allow demonic influences to control us to where we do not walk in love toward the lost, even if they speak all manner of evil against us.  What manner of spirit is controlling you?  Is it the Holy Spirit?  Is it another spirit?  Are you angry and ready to have nothing to do with those who do not speak or do well to you or other Christians?  We must be controlled by the Holy Spirit and not another.  The last thing the Lord wants is for evil to be spoken of Jesus or His ways or us; the disciples of Jesus.

  1. James is my favorite disciple. He tells it like it is without sugar coating. In this example, yes he did get a bit carried away , asking our Lord if fire & thunder should be sent down to remove some nasty folks.
In summation, I agree, that we should always pray for our Holy Spirit to guide our thoughts and action, especially in situations involving other human beings. After all- as humans we make mistakes , but our Lord Jesus Christ does not make mistakes. We must guard our hearts and actions for “demonic influence “, and drive it out of ourselves with prayer to our Holy Spirit to do his will.
