Thy Will Be Done
Daily Devotional for February 18th
And he was withdrawn from them about a stone’s cast, and kneeled down and prayed, Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done. Luke 22:41-42
If we compare our desires from when we first got saved to now, we would all agree that they have changed for the good. The Lord matures us into a person who desires more of His will and less of our selfish desires. The reason is because we feel the emptiness that selfish living brings. We also realize the joy that comes in doing God’s will. The measure of self is the subject that reveals spiritual maturity.
When Jesus said If a man will come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. Luke 9:23, He was teaching us specifically the importance of removing self and how it can be our greatest obstacle. Our greatest barriers to God’s greatest blessings is self. Self gets in our way so much that there could come a time in your life when it will cause you to refuse to complete God’s plan for your life.
Out of all the qualifications for leaders in God’s kingdom on earth, one thing in particular is “Not self-willed.” Titus 1:7. When Jesus was in the garden of Gethsemane, He displayed the perfect example of denying self when He prayed Not my will but thine be done. This is necessary if we are to live for the Lord. If you think about it, living in righteousness is about denying self to an extent because our flesh still desires to sin at times.
One of the secrets of fulfilling God’s will is that we must die daily as Paul said. What most people don’t realize is the power and grace of God will come unto you to help you when you make an earnest commitment to do God’s will. If you war things in your flesh and seek God’s help, He will definitely extend His help to you. There must first be a surrender and commitment to God’s plan. There is power in surrendering to the Lord. Once you die out to your own plans and simply ask God for direction for your life, God who is faithful, will come.
