Peter, James & John Pt. 3

Daily Devotional for January 30th

Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder. And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy. Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me.   Matthew 26:36-38

Before Jesus goes to the cross to pay the horrible sin debt for humanity by bearing the sin of the world, He goes to the Mount of Olives with all of his twelve disciples. He asks nine of His disciples to remain at a certain place in Gethsemane to pray and called forth once again Peter, James and John to go further and pray.  In this account, we see all three disciples mentioned but James and John are referred to as the sons of Zebedee.

As previously established, the other nine disciples were not included in Jesus first raising from the dead, neither were they present at the transfiguration. When Jesus prays here in Gethsemane, only three disciples were to witness His time of agony in prayer.  The Lord will not allow some believers to bear the grueling realities of God’s heart concerning the travesties in the world that He feels.  When Jesus wrestled in prayer concerning the cross, Peter, James and John were called upon to be present and to watch and pray.

When the Lord was to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah, He said to Abraham Shall I hide from my servant that thing which I do…? Genesis 18:17 God will reveal deep things to those who desire His will.  Don’t become lifted up in pride when God reveals anything to you that is not revealed to the masses.  Could it have been that these three disciples were weaker in their walk than the other nine?  Could it be that Jesus needed to spend more attention on these three because they lagged further behind in spiritual maturity? Luke 9:54-55, Matthew 16:22-23 Maybe.  The other nine disciples may not have been able to understand and watch.

Jesus prayed for a season and returned to Peter, James and John and found them sleeping three different occasions. When God entrusts you with burdens to watch and pray for those in danger, it is a privilege but it is also a responsibility. The Lord needs His people to be able to carry burdens to pray for those lost in the world and He will call on you to do so.  Beware though.  It is also in these times that satan will come and attempt to distract you and cause slumber to grip you.

Don’t be discouraged if others are encountering greater experiences in the Lord. It could be that God is trying to pull you into a deeper walk by allowing you to witness His outpouring on others.  Don’t compare your walk with God in maturity to anyone else.  God will pull you deeper.  God will reveal deeper truths and give you insights as you need them and as you seek Him diligently.
