Soldiers of the Cross
Daily Devotional for January 19th
Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier. II Timothy 2:4-5
There’s not a single Christian today that doesn’t see the reality of spiritual warfare. We all feel the effects of it even though the eye cannot see! It’s something that all of us know to be a reality! The problem however, is our knowledge of how to wage warfare. Paul, although having no military background himself, understood the elements that made a good soldier. Some think that the Christian life is without resistance; but the opposite is true. There will be some enduring times if you are determined to walk this walk with Jesus Christ. Jesus never promised a life without warfare, but He did promise victory through it all! Praise His name forever!
No man that fights in an army can be a soldier by day and a civilian by night. Once a person has enlisted into the military, they surrender their civilian rights the entire time they are in active duty. The reason is quite simple; a soldier will not be able to be trained in how to fight spiritually, as long as they’re concentrated on the affairs of everyday life. An enlisted soldier is taken “out of” civilian life so that he may focus on, not just the schemes of the enemy, but the counter-tactics to be victorious over him. The Holy Spirit uses the word “entangled” to let us realize that the affairs of this life will entangle, ensnare and enslave you. It is much like a soldier that has become a prisoner of war through waging warfare. Even though you are a soldier, you cannot fight once you are taken captive.
Apostle Paul declared that the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God. (2 Corinthians 10:4) What weapons are you using to wage warfare? Today’s church world has been reduced to enticing people into Christ by other means than God’s way, but the truth is the lost and undone without Christ are prisoners to Satan and the fight must be fought with spiritual weapons. One of those weapons is prayer. Prayer is a very powerful weapon against the enemy, but prayer without faith will not avail anything! We must pray in faith; nothing wavering! If deliverance comes to the one your praying for, it will be the prayer of faith that was answered.
The greatest weapon we carry, though, is the Cross of Calvary! The cross will forever be the place where Jesus defeated Satan. Directing men and women to the cross is the greatest service we can ever do for anyone to find hope in being rescued from Satan’s clutches. Jesus has called you to be a soldier. You cannot opt out as a contentious objector. The souls of your family are in the balance. Let’s wage war so that our people will be saved and that we may be pleasing unto the Lord who has chosen us to be a soldier.
