If You Can Believe

Daily Devotional for January 10th

And ofttimes it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him: but if thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us. Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.  And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.  Mark 9:22-24

Depending on who you ask, you will get varying opinions on what people wrestle with in their walk with God.  Although some would disagree, our greatest struggle is not sin, but trusting God.  Believing in God’s promises are so contrary to the natural mind.  We have seen so many things take their natural course to death that it is against carnal reason to believe something will change.

As this man brought his son to Jesus, he describes the terrible plight of his son.  The demons had tore him, thrown him into the fire and water.  The common average person would have thought this boy was attempting suicide; but there was demonic oppression behind it all.  How would your faith fair if your child was in this condition?

Without much thought, this man made a desperate plea to Jesus.  If you can do anything…help us. There are situations in this life we find ourselves in where we want to point the blame to the direction of Jesus as to why our situation remains horrible.  The man attempted to place the ball in Jesus’ court.  But Jesus was not the cause of why the boy had been in this shape or why he remained that way till this hour.  His unbelief was obvious with the words if thou canst do anything.

Do you find yourself in circumstances where your faith is so small that you wonder if Jesus can do anything?  Jesus graciously revealed the solution to this man.  If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.  You see, the problem is not in the hands of Jesus friend, it is with our faith.    In your situations today, do you find yourself wanting to declare as this father did Lord if you can do anything…help us!  Make no mistake friend, Jesus can!  Jesus will!  But the problem is with us!  If you can believe?  If I can believe?  All things are possible to him that believeth!  What a tremendous promise!
