Harden Not Your Heart – Daily Devotion for December 9th

Harden Not Your Heart

Daily Devotional for December 9th

Wherefore as the Holy Ghost saith, To day, if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness: When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years. Hebrews 3:7-9

Often times we wonder what event; what one thing happens in a person’s life to cause them to become numb or hardened in their hearts.  We examine the tragedies, deaths in the family, and other things to try to determine what caused it.  Some people seem to become calloused through divorce, while others it seems to be the result of a death of a very close loved one.

According to this verse, the heart becomes hard when a person rejects the voice of God in their life.  Israel journeyed in the desert for forty years daily seeing God’s miraculous provision of manna, clothing and shoes that did not wear out, but refused to believe His word concerning crossing over into the promise land.  The remainder of this chapter reveals unbelief was the fruit that a hardened heart produced.

What about you?  When the Lord has spoken to your heart, how has your heart responded; with faith or unbelief?  When the heart believes God, amazing things happen.  God’s promises will come unto you.  This comes by the simple faith of a child.  It’s a simple choice to believe what God says.

However, once the hard is hardened, the person enters a condition where discouragement, defeat, and bondage sets in on them.  Just because you’re a child of God doesn’t mean that your heart cannot be hardened through unbelief.  Remember it was God’s people in the desert whose hearts became hardened.

Let us not become hardened through refusing to believe what God’s word says.  If the Lord has promised you something, don’t respond in unbelief.  This will cause you to be so hardened that unbelief will eventually overtake ever area of your life.  But To day, if we will hear His voice, His word, His Spirit, let us receive it joyfully in faith because He is faithful that promised.
