Beware Reefs that Lie Beneath

Daily Devotional for November 29th

These are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots; Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever. Jude 1:12-13

Amazingly, the Holy Spirit used wonderful imagery in order to describe many great spiritual truths in order to pen down the words of the New Testament. Of those images, ships and sailing seemed to be one of the favorites.  We see many references to sailing in the writings of James, Paul and Peter.  The reason is no doubt because the christian life is so similar to the everchanging seas, storms, winds and how we constantly have to adjust ourselves to sail through them.

Here in Jude, we see the dangers of men who creep in unawares. They hide from us, but their destructiveness is sure.  They appear harmless on the outside, but there are dangerous rocks underneath.  Do you accept the teaching of anyone and everyone who opens a bible?  Paul warned that we should beware that the time would come when teachers would be heaped upon the churches in the last days.  The result of this would be great destruction of Christians.

Spots here means much more than just a blemish. The word is very interesting! It comes from G4694 pronounced spee-las’ which means; a ledge or reef of rock in the sea:– spot. The idea here is that these men hide amongst God’s people the same as rock ledges or reefs hide in the sea. These men lurk underneath the surface, without fear, and harm the child of God the same as the shallow rocks and reefs shred the bottom of a ship.  Once your run the ship aground striking a reef, it won’t be long before you become a victim of the reef and begin sinking.

Many in the church today are being led off into false doctrines that do more than place you into a different view of scripture. False teaching will draw you away from the truth and bring spiritual disaster and wreckage in your life.  Jesus declared that the truth shall make you free. This conversely declares that a lie will bring you into bondage and destruction.  Take heed the teaching you accept in your home.  The deeper you are in God’s word and spirit, the less likely these reefs can shred your ship’s hull.
