Satan’s Tricks and Treats
Daily Devotional for October 29th
But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. 2 Corinthians11:3
As we enter into the fall season, the day of Halloween is swiftly upon us. Many children will go from house to house proclaiming the words “trick or treat” and will receive candy as they are dressed up in their favorite character. Receiving candy is an innocent thing in itself and dressing into character can be harmless, but let us not forget about the tricks the enemy can play upon us.
In the garden of Eden, the serpent was more subtle than any other beast of the field. (Genesis 3:1) The serpent hid and waited for an opportunity to attack. The very nature of a serpent is to destroy. Jesus said that Satan comes to kill, still and to destroy. John 10:10. When he comes to attack us, his intentions are always to take precious things but his ultimate goal is to take souls with him to an eternal Hell.
Satan schemes are much like a common mouse trap. The treat lies within the trick. Much like the cheese on the trap, Satan lures us with things he knows we desire to use it to draw us into his traps. Once a person is drawn into the trap, he secures them. Paul declared to Timothy that pride and a bad report in the world would cause him to fall into a snare of the devil. (1 Timothy 3:6-7) He also declared that riches can be used as temptations and snares. (1 Timothy 6:9) Satan truly has no treats. Although his temptations come with a perception of pleasure, they result in spiritual bondage and eventually spiritual death.
As children of God, we are still susceptible to the devil’s tricks. Just because you’re a Christian doesn’t mean you will not suffer sin’s consequences. If you are an unbeliever, then the devil has entrapped you through the lusts of the flesh, but Jesus will deliver if you call upon him. Even though Satan has trapped many people and continues to do so, Jesus is always able and willing to deliver from those tricks. The Psalmist said “Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. (Psalm 91:3) If you’ve found yourself fallen into one of Satan’s schemes, call out to the only one who can deliver. His name is Jesus.
