Castaway By Self
Daily Devotional for October 16th
But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway. 1 Corinthians 9:27
Jesus spoke volumes to us concerning Self. Self is deceitful, wicked, self-serving, looks away from others; the list is endless. Jesus also taught that those who will follow must deny self, take up the cross and follow Him. Luke 9:23. The reason is because self, which includes your will, desires, goals, fleshly lusts, ambitions, etc. are forever contrary to the will of God. There never will be a time in your life when self will desire the things of God. All of these things are carnal and must be denied.
What is so bad about self anyway? One thing is clear from this scripture; and that is; your flesh is your enemy. It is against you. Romans 8:8 says you can’t please God in the flesh. Your flesh is at war with your spirit constantly. It seeks to dominate your life; your spirit. The flesh is Satan’s avenue into your life. Our flesh has not been redeemed yet. It will be changed one day, but until then, it is still susceptible to come against you. For this reason, we must beware that the flesh is against the spirit.
If you notice closely, Paul is revealing a very important truth. Paul kept his body under subjection the same as a master keeps a servant or slave under subjection. Paul’s spirit dominated his flesh; his body. Why was this so important? The following words tell us why; lest…I myself should be a castaway. This clearly reveals to us that if you do not bring your flesh under subjection, then it; self; the flesh; your body will cast you overboard. The idea here is that Paul understood the deceitfulness of the flesh. If you give in or subject to it, it will make a slave of you. The choice is either the spirit of man dominates the flesh, or the flesh dominates the spirit. The flesh will cast you overboard if you submit to its demands.
Do you realize that your body; i.e., your flesh can rise up in mutiny against you? Your flesh is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. When you deny self, you are literally removing the greatest avenue where Satan can destroy you. Our only answer to the carnal mind and flesh is to deny it; to crucify it; to put it under subjection so that it does not dominate us. The only way we can accomplish this though is through Jesus Christ. Trust Him today.
