Glory Far Outweighs Affliction – Daily Devotion for October 9th

Glory Far Outweighs Affliction

Daily Devotional for October 9th

For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; 2 Corinthians 4:17

Paul was one of the most impressive men that Jesus ever saved. He seemed to be made out of different materials as we are today.  His life was one of affliction, suffering and peril, but Paul was not moved by any of those things.  Paul resolved that would carry out the remainder of his life serving the one who love him and gave Himself for him regardless of what he had to go through.  What a wonderful testimony of love for Christ!

Most of us today do not take affliction the same way. We are so comforted in our flesh that we are willing to do anything that will stop the pain or the affliction.  Most of us have allowed our bad experiences to define us.  In this chapter, Paul declared that he was troubled on every side, cast down, always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus.  These verses cause us to pity Paul so much.  But then he turns around in this verse and says for our light affliction. How in the world can a man say such things?  How can he go through all of the persecution and suffering, but immediately after call it light affliction?

Your life today may be one of persecution and suffering. Your past may have defined who you are.  People who know you may not view you apart from a disease, accident, condition or ailment.  Any affliction people suffer in this life has been used by the devil to drive them from God.  But Paul grasped something in the midst of his affliction.  He grasped the fact that God was not only walking with Him, but that the power and glory of God far outweighed any affliction he was presently enduring.  Can you say that friend?

Although this verse is very much contrary to the mindset of the unsaved world, the truth is that God desires us to lean on Him so greatly in our times of affliction that we will never view the affliction as a dread anymore, but that we forever look back on it as a moment when Jesus ministered unto us so greatly that the affliction turned into a blessing. The world will never comprehend this because they do not know the Lord, but it is true!  The power of God will rest upon those in affliction so greatly.  This verse puts us in mind of Paul placed his affliction on one side of a scale, and the power of God on the other.  When he did, there was no comparison in weight.

The grace of God; the power of God; His strength, etc., all of these phrases describe the same thing. Paul would go on in this letter to say that His strength is made perfect through our weakness.  An eternal weight of glory is available to all who seek the Lord in their times of anguish.  Jesus promised rest for those who are weary and heavy laden.  Once this weight of glory rests upon you, the affliction can only be viewed as light.  No disease can outweigh the glory, no sickness, no cancer, nothing can compare.  Paul would speak the same message to the Romans in the words for I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared to the glory that shall be revealed in us. This does not mean one day in glory, but today; right now!  Call on Jesus today.  His glory will outweigh whatever you are facing.
