Pressing On for God
Daily Devotional for September 6th
The cloke that I left at Troas with Carpus, when thou comest, bring with thee, and the books, but especially the parchments. 2 Timothy 4:13
Living the Christian life in the midst of a perverse generation can definitely become challenging. There are so many temptations that not only keep the unsaved world enslaved, but even tend to draw God’s people away from the work the Lord has called us to fulfil.
Your calling in the Kingdom of God has much more impact on the world than you could ever imagine. This is why the devil will stop at nothing to attempt to keep you battle-torn and discouraged. Paul faced tremendous opposition and struggles as he fulfilled God’s will in his life. He suffered shipwreck, beaten with rods, stoned, etc. 2 Corinthians 11:25. Yet through it all, Paul resolved to fulfill God’s plan for his life.
As Paul wrote this last letter to Timothy, he had declared that Demas (once one of the faithful brethren to labor with Paul) had forsaken him having loved this present world. It is the most painful when fellow laborers walk away. It is also in these times when some people choose to give up. Paul, however, was determined to complete his purpose.
Paul asked Timothy to bring his cloke with him when he came, along with the books, but especially the parchments. The books were most likely the Old Testament scriptures and letters that Paul had written. The parchments were blank skins that were used to write on. By Paul asking Timothy, he was letting Timothy know that there was still work to do, things upon his heart to write and studying of the scriptures to attend to. He was still pressing on and had every intention of seeing the end of this glorious Christian life.
You may have to endure the hurt of seeing fellow laborers walk away, disciples leave, brothers/sisters in Christ leave the fight, but that doesn’t mean that you are to give up the fight. You have a race to run and Heaven is cheering you on to the finish. Don’t give up! Keep pressing on! There is a reward laid up for all of those who will endure hard seasons and faithfully press on to finish their course.
