Living Faith/Dead Faith

Daily Devotional for August 15th

For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. James 2:26

Although the world may not realize it, God is so interested you receiving the promises that His Son Jesus suffered and died to provide. Why is it though at times we do not receive what we know the Lord has promised if we believe?  Could it be that our concept of faith may be misunderstood?  The bible speaks of two types of faith; a living, i.e., receiving faith and a dead faith.

In a few verses prior, James had declared that the devils believe, but concluded that kind of faith is irrelevant. James 2:19. Although believing in God is the beginning, this type of faith can not receive of God.  This is simply an acknowledgement that God exists.  He would confirm the ineffectiveness of this kind of faith by saying that faith without works is dead.  James 2:20.

A living faith is revealed in how we respond to God. A living faith will produce an obedient response that will result in receiving the promise.  A dead faith will remain frozen in unbelief.  For example, you may say that you believe a newly built chair can hold you securely without breaking, but if you never demonstrate that by actually sitting in the chair, then no one will be convinced of your faith; i.e., your faith will never be proven.

James is saying that your faith will cause you to act upon what you believe. Noah exhibited this kind of faith when he built the ark.  Rahab exhibited this type of faith when she hid the spies at Jericho.  Hebrews 11 is full of examples of men and women whose faith drove them to act.  This is a living faith!

What kind of faith to you have? Is your faith limited to a belief in God but that faith has not directed you to act upon what you believe?  Don’t be discouraged if you have not received the answer to what you’ve prayed for.  A living faith will drive you to act!  If you have a living faith, it will be shown in your actions.  People will hear your faith in your speech.  But most importantly, if you have a living faith, then God will honor it by sending the promise to you!
