Renouncing the Hidden Things
Daily Devotional for August 14th
Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not; But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God. 2 Corinthians 4:1-2
Man cannot see inside us, but our hearts are transparent for the Lord to see. There are times we are subject to hide things from people. Most of the time, we do not hide things for the purpose of holding on to them, but because we are ashamed of them. But God knows they are there. One of the greatest decisions you will ever make in your walk with God is to be honest with Him; honest about, not only the weights and sins that are evident for the world to see, but the hidden things as well.
When you gave your life to Christ, you literally changed masters. As you once served in submission to Satan’s demands, now you are under new management; new citizenship. We are now citizens in the kingdom of God. You have a new life under a new King. The word renounce means much more than simply to reject. It means to that, as a former citizen to another country, you have surrendered all rights, privileges of the previous land in order to obtain the freedom and citizenship of Heaven.
Paul revealed here that he had renounced the hidden things; things that man could not see. Things such as dishonesty, craftiness; which means subtilty or trickery, nor handling the word of God deceitfully are things we must renounce in our lives. These are things that a judge or jury cannot see, but God can. In your walk with God, our desire is to be totally and completely transparent with God. We long for heart purity, even the things that are only known in the deepest parts of our hearts. Instead of either ignoring weaknesses within us because no one can see them, we should bring them before the Lord asking Him to cleanse us from both the hidden things as well as those that are seen.
We may not reveal things that we keep in our hearts, but we cannot keep them from being revealed in our life. The hidden things will always manifest themselves in some way. Jesus said for out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies. Matt. 15:19. Paul would go on to reveal an amazing truth. If a person has renounced the hidden things, it would be evident by the manifestation of the truth. God has always confirmed His word with His Spirit. As sin is a symptom of a heart condition, a life of purity is a sign of a clean heart Let us ask God, not just to deal with us concerning the clearly seen problems, but the darkest corners of our hearts that no one knows. He will honor your honesty and cleanse from everything!
