The Disciple Jesus Loved
Daily Devotional for August 10th
Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee? Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do? Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me. John 21:20-22
What a wonderful thought it is for someone to know that they are loved by Jesus; the Son of God! It’s a love that transcends comprehension! Although the love of Christ cannot be fully explained, it is definitely wonderful to experience. One thing is for sure, when you are touched by the His love, you will NEVER EVER be the same! It becomes a defining moment you never forget in all of your life.
Some people are forever identified by a tragedy, a sickness or an ailment. We read of blind Bartimaeus, Simon the Leper etc. Of all the things John, the son of Zebedee could have referred to himself as, he chose the description the disciple whom Jesus loved, John 13:23, 20:2-10, 21:7 and 21:20. Was John the only disciple Jesus loved? Of course not. There were eleven others who Jesus loved very much.
What caused John to describe himself this way? He obviously knew beyond any doubt that Jesus loved him! Out of all the wonderful things about Jesus, it is His love that was so evident in John’s life. Jesus had proved His love to John a million times over! He will do the same with you friend! Our lives are so full of failure! We had so many faults; so many reasons to deserve the misery that came to us, but Jesus showed His love toward us. You’re a child of God today, not because you deserved it, but because Jesus loves you. His love has marked your life.
How do you identify yourself to the world? Satan has defined so many people in our generation; the town drunk; the homeless lady, the Legion of Gadara. Do not let the world define you! If you will allow Jesus to do so, He will define you by His character. Are you the one whom Jesus delivered? The one whom Jesus rescued? The one whom Jesus healed? The one whom Jesus gave second, third and fourth chance to? Whatever the case may be, the Lord will define you! There will come a time when you’ll introduce yourself to the world in some way Christ has touched you deeply!
