Sufferings Can’t Compare
Daily Devotional for June 1st
And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him that we may be also glorified together. For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. Romans 8:17-18
The suffering you endure most of the time is spiritual at the root. The methods by which you suffer are fueled by the devil’s anger toward you. Since you are now a child of God, you are targeted. Jesus revealed this in John 15:20. But your consolation is that God will always come to your defense; He will always come to your aid when you suffer for His namesake. This is not just a promise of the glory that shall be revealed after we die. This is a promise that God will come to your aid now and reveal His glory in your present suffering. Don’t miss this!
Why can’t the sufferings compare to the glory? It is quite simple! Satan’s schemes cannot compare to the help that Jesus will pour out upon us! God’s strength is always made perfect in our weakness. This is how Peter could face his death and request to be crucified upside down. This is how Paul could look beyond Nero’s chopping block. This is how John the Revelator could not be boiled in oil! If you are in Jesus Christ, no suffering that can take place in your life that Jesus will not be able to succour! This is how Paul could say to the Corinthians that persecution is “For our light affliction which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.” 2 Corinthians 4:17
Peter would echo these exact words in 1 Peter 4:12-14. When you suffer for Christ, Peter said “happy are ye.” How is that possible? It is because in the midst of your persecution, you have a promise that the spirit of glory will come and rest upon you. This is a special grace! It has been referred to as martyrs grace! Stephen rested in this power when he was martyred in Acts.
Do you realize that the sufferings that the devil would seek to destroy you with will actually position you where the glory of God will be revealed in your life? Instead of allowing these sufferings to move us from God, let us rest in faith realizing that there is a power from God; a glory that will come from the presence of the Lord to sustain us, to keep us in our time of trial. The truth is, not only can Satan’s bad compare to God’s goodness, it is not even worthy to be compared to the God’s glory!
