Celebrating Pentecost

Daily Devotional for May 31st

And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. Acts 2:1-2

As Israel observes the feast of Pentecost at this time, we should not lose sight of God’s purpose was for it. As with all seven feasts God ordained for Israel to recognize each year, this feast serves as a prophecy with great spiritual significance.  Jesus was sacrificed during Passover, was in the tomb during the feast of Unleavened Bread, and arose on the feast of Firstfruits.

Pentecost was the next feast in God’s order. People today do not realize though that Pentecost, as well as all other of the feasts, was ordained by God in the Old Testament.  Pentecost is all about the harvest.  Pentecost literally means 50; in reference to 50 days after Passover.  This means that there is no Pentecost without their first being a Passover.  Spiritually speaking, Pentecost could not come until Jesus was glorified.  John 7:39.  On the very first Pentecost, the children of Israel found themselves at Mt. Sinai and saw the presence of God descend upon the mountain.  Exodus 19.  On the churches first Pentecost, they also saw the presence of God.

In this verse of scripture, God sent His Spirit to fill each believer for service in the harvest. God still desires today to fill the church.  Many people though, think that one filling is sufficient.  Paul exhorted us to “be not drunk with wine…but be filled with the Spirit.”  Ephesians 5:18.  Equipping men and women to win souls is the purpose of being filled with the Spirit.  If you desire to see souls born again into the kingdom of God, then God desires to equip you for that harvest.

Are you celebrating Pentecost? Not as Israel celebrates it, but as the early church celebrated it as God intended.  Contrary to what many people say, God desires to fill you with His Spirit so that you may be a witness for Him in the earth.  The power of the Holy Spirit is the only thing that can turn people from darkness to light.  We have become ineffective in our preaching the gospel because we have chosen to do so without the help of the Holy Spirit.  We can only accomplish this through the power of God working in and through us.  Ask God today to equip you with the power He desires you to have so that you can be effective in the world for Christ.
