Victory Over Death
Daily Devotional for April 15th
Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, ans the manner of the Jews is to bury. Now in the place there was a garden; and in the garden wherein was never man yet laid. There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jew’s preparation day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand. John 19:41-42
What a mystery there is in what Jesus accomplished while He was here on earth. He came in a time when government oppression and demonic oppression was at its worst. The people of Israel were under oppression by a foreign kingdom; Rome. Israel was in the same condition as they were in Moses’ day, only this time they were slaves in their own land.
The mystery of this story is the spiritual oppression. Satan had lorded over all of humanity through sin. Death entered because of that sin. Since then, there has been a fear of death. But Jesus came to conquer death. And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. Hebrews 2:15.
The Cross was the goliath of Rome. It stood as an emblem of fear to all who looked upon it. It spoke the message “Don’t mess with Rome or you’ll suffer the cross.” The cross caused many people to live in fear all of their lives. No one would dare rise against the status quo. No one would be bold enough to defy Rome. The tomb was exactly the same; only it wasn’t Rome’s strong arm, it was Satan’s.
Jesus not only fearlessly faced the Roman Cross for you and I, but He faced the strongest weapon Lucifer had; and that was death. No one had ever walked away from the tomb; EVER! Death had always been strong enough to hold all who entered it. If Jesus had not rose from the death, then there would be no victory over death. He rose from death showing that He was stronger than death. Jesus now has the keys of hell and of death. Revelation 1:18. He has conquered it all for us and won back the things Satan stole from us.
Although death is still present in the world, it has been conquered. 2 Timothy 1:10. Jesus has now abolished death. This means that death cannot hold us prisoners anymore because of the Cross. All believers enter Heaven immediately at death because of Jesus’ victory. One of these days Jesus will totally destroy death. Not only has Rome’s cross been conquered, but Satan’s tomb as well. Neither have anything to boast of because Jesus is the One who overcame both; and He did it for you.
