The Cross: The Eternal Battlefield
Daily Devotional for April 14th
And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha: Where they crucified him, and two others with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst. John 19:17-18
This week in history, the world turns its focus on the last days of Jesus’ ministry and His suffering and death at Golgotha. Not many people understand the significance of the Cross of where Jesus died. Although many others were crucified on the same hill, on the same type of cross, and in the same manner, Jesus’ crucifixion could not be compared to any other. Jesus’ death at the cross is foolishness to those who perish, but the power of God to those who believe.
The cross was a battlefield. Jesus had already enlightened Nicodemus, a religious leader, that as the serpent was lifted up in the wilderness, so must the son of man be lifted up. This meant that God’s plan to redeem mankind, who had been bitten by the serpent, would be to conquer the serpent by placing Himself on the cross to be our substitution sacrifice.
When Jesus hung for six long hours on the cross, the world only saw a man suffering, but in the spirit, there was the greatest battle being waged for mankind that has ever been fought. Satan had his strongest artillery turned on us, but Jesus stepped between us and in the line of fire at the cross. In a sense, Jesus was saying “Everything you wish to do to mankind, turn it on me.” Jesus destroyed every weapon, every method, every chain, every vice; everything Satan had used on humanity. Jesus totally disarmed the entire kingdom of Darkness.
Why is Satan still so powerful in the world then? Because it’s only in the Cross where the remedy over Satan is and nowhere else. The world is conquered today only because people choose not to come to the cross of Jesus. This is also why Satan will stop at nothing to detour you away from the cross. He knows that his works will be destroyed in your life when you come to Jesus. Satan was publically humiliated at the Cross. Since Jesus defeated the devil there, all He asks us to do is to come to Him. Everything Satan has overcome you with will be broken when Jesus touches you.
Are there things in your life today that you are not free from? Are there chains of bondage keeping you from living a life of freedom and victory? If so, take it to Jesus. He’s already defeated everything Satan has done and ever will do in you life. Satan bruised the heel of Jesus, but Jesus bruised the head of the serpent at the cross. The battle has been fought and won. There’s no need for you to fight, just come to Jesus believing.
