Deceitful Life Boats

Daily Devotional for March 25th & 26th

And as the shipmen were about to flee out of the ship, when they had let down the boat into the sea, under colour as though they would have cast anchors out of the foreship, Paul said to the centurion and to the soldiers, Except these abide in the ship, ye cannot be saved. Acts 27:30-31

No one naturally thrives in times of great calamities.  We always avoid these situations at all costs.  They are conditions that make us feel uncomfortable because we realize that in them we are no longer in control.  What a mess of things that we can make if we make the wrong decisions!

Did you know that trouble prompts us to make decisions that most of the time wind up being the worst decisions?  When we are faced with storms, the natural reaction is to move ourselves in the direction that saves our lives.  If you do not have time to survey the situation and examine all of the possibilities, then you will most likely make a bad decision.

In what seemed to be the best decision to save the lives of the shipmen, they were about to commit suicide.  In these verses, we see that these sailors were opting to abandon ship and make for shore.  The only trouble was this; Paul knew they wouldn’t make it.  Paul, this unlearned Christian who had no knowledge of the sea, had just prior to this warned them that this journey would end in devastation.  Now a man of God has just given them another bit of advice.  Make no mistake friend, refusing to go in God’s way will always cause destruction.

There are deceitful life boats in this life that people immediately flee to, but they ultimately become the worst choice made in a storm.  Satan will convince you that the only way out of your storm is to do something of your own wisdom and effort.  Have you asked the Lord for direction?  If you notice in this chapter, when everyone else is running in panic, Paul slips away to pray.  It is in his time of prayer that God gives him the answer to survive.  He will direct your path too if you will acknowledge Him.  (Proverbs 3:5)
