Empty Water Brooks

Daily Devotional for March 22nd

And it came to pass after a while, that the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land. And the word of the Lord came unto him, saying, Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee.  1 Kings 17:7-8

In our attempts to follow the Lord, at times we have trouble discerning the direction God wants us to travel. We get so comfortable in certain places that it becomes difficult for the Lord to move us.  We know this Christian life is about growing, advancing and journeying, but once we find a great place of refreshing, we seldom want to leave it.

In order for the Lord to advance us, often times He will dry up the brooks we are used to drinking from. There comes a time when the brooks you are used to drinking from will dry up.  It is very seldom easy to leave them though.  We have a connection to them.  The brook may be next to our house.  It may be in the community that we live in.  We’ve always gone there.  Sadly, many people die of thirst simply because they refuse to move when God says move.

Our problem most of the time is, we do not want to leave the watering brooks that we’ve come so used to. Some brooks were provided to you to supply you in a temporary time in your life.  We misinterpret the Lord’s provision for dwelling.  Just because the Lord led you to waters, does not necessarily mean He intended for you to permanently remain there.  There are a great many believers who find themselves becoming stagnant, cold and indifferent because they have not moved to the Lord’s new place of provision.

If the water brook has dried up and you aren’t being supplied, could it be that you have opted to stay at the brook instead of following the Shepherd to the next provision? You cannot remain strong in the Lord  when you refuse to move on when He is leading.  If you’re not being refreshed, then that place has become empty.  If your Christian life is fresh and exciting as it once was, then ask the Lord to show you where His current water supply is, He will lead you there.
