The Peace of God

Daily Devotional for February 14th

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.  And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.  Philippians 4:6-7

Peace is one of the most valuable commodities known to man.  This world spends an innumerable amount of money and energy searching for peace.  What the lost and dying world doesn’t realize is peace cannot be found in things we possess.  When trouble comes, we want to make it stop because we attribute peace as a trait that comes at the end of trouble.  God does much greater for us than this.

There is such a thing as worldly peace.  Most of the time, this type of peace comes when troubles aren’t present in our life.  But this verse speaks of a different kind of peace; namely the peace of God.  God’s peace is not contingent upon trouble, but is present regardless of it.  When God’s peace comes upon us, there is a calm in the midst of troubles.  This is why Paul describes it as a peace that passeth all understanding.  It’s because you have peace when it does not make sense that you should have peace.  This is the peace of God.

This verse reveals that we should not be careful (be anxious or worried) about things, but to pray about them.  When we cast our cares upon the Lord as this verse describes, the peace of God will keep our hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.  Jesus is the author of this kind of peace.  As a matter of fact, He is the prince of peace.  Isaiah 9:6.

When Jesus speaks peace, the storms have to obey His voice.  When He declares peace to you, He will extend unto you, not just any peace, but His peace.  Jesus rests in the midst of storms.  Matthew 8:24.  Jesus said Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you.  Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.  John 14:27.  When the peace of God rests upon you, then you’ll be able to rest regardless of what storms blow around you.
