Setting Your Affections

Daily Devotional for Monday January 16th 2017

Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.  Colossians 3:2

The devil is so deceitful in how that he draws us away and into the slime pits of sin in the world.  People do not realize that the devil lures us through the lusts of the flesh.  Most of the time. all we see is our heart simply longing for something and we do know how to control it.

Many times, instead of questioning why our hearts are drawn to certain things, we just simply follow our hearts.  We give in to our desires.  We choose to go headlong after it, even when we know it is sin.  We allow our feelings to control us.  Most people don’t even believe it’s possible to control our affections.  The unsaved person cannot, but the child of God has a power within them greater than the desire that seeks to lure them.

This verse speaks a totally different message.  This verse proclaims that we not only have the ability to control our affections, but we have the responsibility.  This verse plainly reveals that God has not removed the believer’s free will.  Paul clearly states here that if we are risen with Christ, the we should seek those things which are above.

We should also set our affection on things above, not on things on the earth.  This means that a saved person should not be chasing the same desires the world chases.  Our desire should be on things above.  Do you desire God over the things of the world?  Is your affection set after the things Heaven desires?  Seeing people saved, delivered and set free?  Do you hunger and thirst after righteousness?  Do you desire to be filled with the Spirit of God?  If so, then your affections are set on things above.  If your affections are on things of this world, then set them on things above.  If you’re a child of God, then Satan cannot control you or your affections.  All he can do is entice you.  It is up to you to set your affections in their proper place; Heaven.
