Wait Upon the Lord

Daily devotional for Tuesday January 3rd 2017

But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with winds as eagles; they shall run, and not by weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.  Isaiah 40:31

The eagle is one of the most amazing of God’s creation.  Eagles are known for their ability to soar to heights that few other birds are able to reach.  We look at the eagle and marvel at their ability to rise to those heights and how that they are able to accomplish it so effortlessly.  We also look at the struggles that we face in this life and wonder if we will ever be able to rise above them.  So many times, we feel as though we must give way to everything takes place in our lives.  Our past failures in our struggles have caused us to become discouraged and unbelief tries to overcome our hearts so that trusting God become so uncomfortable for any troubles that lie ahead.

Eagles make their nests in the highest mountains on the top of the highest cliffs.  When it’s time to fly, the eagle gets on top of the cliff.  It doesn’t just launch from the cliff and start flapping in its own strength, it rather waits for a wind to blow in its favor.  The spiritual storms of our lives many times blow in the opposite direction of the way we are going.  Satan seeks to hinder your walk.  The direction your walking is toward the Lord and in the way of the Lord.  Satan wants to detour you from that direction.  He uses troubles to try to accomplish this.

Did you know that many times we want to launch out when we feel the need or do things in our own strength with the thinking that we have enough energy to make it through, only to fall in the midst of the journey?  As the eagle waits upon the wind, we are to wait upon the Lord!  The reason for this is simple; God wants you to rely on His strength and not your own.  When we do it in our own strength, we find ourselves wore out, burned out and knocked out!  But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength.  What is so wrong about waiting on the Lord?  Instead of the eagle using its own strength to get to his destination, it uses the power of the wind to carry it.  While the wind is under its wings carrying the eagle, the eagle is resting and renewing its strength.  What an amazing truth!

The Lord knows the journey is long.  He knows the struggles you face are real!  He also knows your inability to fight against the adversary.  This is why the Lord has ordained that He would be with you to carry you through the hard times you face in life.  The Lord declared in Zechariah, “Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit.”  Instead of launching out in your own strength, wait upon the Lord!  He will strengthen you.  He will renew your strength.
