Nailing it to His CROSS

Daily devotional for Friday August 26th 2016

Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; Colossians 2:14

There are some people today that believe the death of Jesus on the cross was a failure.  Recently, one of today’s most popular religious leaders was even quoted as saying “the life of Jesus ended in failure; the failure of the cross.”  When a religious leader can say this publicly for the world to hear, he simply does not understand the cross.  The world may look upon the cross as failure, but it’s because they don’t understand the victory that He won for us there.  Paul said that the preaching of the cross was to them that perish, foolishness.  An unbelieving world cannot comprehend the reason of every christian’s affection to the cross!

John the Baptist, when seeing Jesus coming to his baptism, made the most profound revelation concerning Jesus of Nazareth.  “Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” (John 1:29) The world, when viewing death, always sees failure.  This is always true unless that death is a sacrifice.  The old testament is filled with the blood of lambs sacrificed for the sins of fallen Israel.  That sacrifice was intended to represent, not only a means of forgiving the committed sin, but as a measure of justice to atone for the heinous crimes that man committed against a holy God.

The JFK assassination cover-up was a prime example of blotting out evidence that was against the guilty. The incriminating evidence in the JFK assassination scandal was blotted out; blacked out by a marker or pin.  This evidence would have led the nation to condemning the murderer to death.  It was however, blotted out.  All the evidence that was on paper was simply “lined through” or “blotted out.”  Since that time, the guilty party has been able to enjoy freedom and even a sense of innocence due to that blotting.

Friend, do you realize that when Jesus went to the cross and bled for you and I, that He blotted out every act of failure that we committed?  Everything that was against us!  Everything that was contrary to us!  Jesus removed it at the Cross!  When Jesus was nailed to the cross, Paul is saying here that, because He died in our place, He represented the failure of every man and by dying the death for every man, He paid that horrible price for man that the righteousness of God required.  Now, every fault and failure has been blotted out.  Not with ink or marker, but by His precious blood!  Just like the JFK cover-up, every piece of evidence that condemned you and I, was blotted out by the wonderful blood shed on Calvary’s cross.  When you accept that payment for your sin, you receive a freedom from sin that can only come through Christ.  You are free; no longer condemned by your past sins and no longer to be confined to living a life bound to the slave master of sin; the Devil.  God has given you a brand new start; a brand new life to live. When we stand before God on that great judgment day, the moment that we accepted Christ’s sacrifice for blotting out of our sin will be the most important moment and decision of our life.  Thank God for the Cross!
