“Military Science”
Have you ever considered the fact that Satan and his hordes study your life? The devil knows you; he knows your strengths and weaknesses. He knows your strongest of times, he knows your weakest of times. He knows what bait to use on you; he knows when and where to push your buttons. An army is effective when he knows the enemy. That can only be done by studying the enemy. If you we understand that the devil studies and knows our life and patterns, don’t you think it would be wise to study him?
There is an academic discipline that studies military history, institutions, practices, and technologies, including political science, international affairs, and psychological assessment for the purpose of education in military operations. It’s called Military Science. It focuses on the theory, method, and practice of producing military capabilities for national defense. Military science also encompasses the study of warfare, the application of coercive force, and the development of strategies and tactics for success in both peace and war.
Judges 3:1-4 Now these are the nations which the LORD left, to prove Israel by them, even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of Canaan; Only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as before knew nothing thereof; Namely, five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baal-hermon unto the entering in of Hamath. And they were to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of the LORD, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses..
From Judges 3:2, the word teach comes from the Hebrew word H3925 pronounced “lamad” which means properly to goad, that is, (by implication) to teach (the rod being an Oriental incentive):–[un-] accustomed, X diligently, expert, instruct, learn, skillful, teach (-er,-ing). As strange as it may sound to the typical Christian in our modern culture, we are to study and learn warfare. Why you may ask? Because Satan has declared war on the entirety of creation whether we fight back or not. This understanding causes us to consider the fact that there will naturally come a point in each individual believer’s life that we must become militant. In Psalms 18:34, David declared of the Lord that “He Teacheth My Hands To War, so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms.” This means that God Himself was the military instructor to David. He also has in His plan to teach us warfare. Military Science encompasses a few major principles from which warfare strategies derive; the nature of the enemy, and the nature of self and warfare capabilities.
Military Science includes knowing our enemy. In order to become effective and successful in this ultimate spiritual battle, we must understand our adversary the devil. Paul obviously studied the enemy and knew his tactics. The modern Christian has the entire library of scripture to study spiritual warfare tactics. From the first and only war of Abram, to the last battles John discusses in the book of Revelation, we have been given powerful incite and instruction on how to win in war. We have the successful battles of David, the tactics of Satan that led to the failures of King Saul, Samson, Balaam and many others. All of these examples are our focus of military academics that should school us in the successful study of warfare strategies.
The reason Satan is so effective against humanity is because he has had centuries to study and observe human nature. He not only knows the common failures that plague mankind generally, he also knows our personal and individual weaknesses. We must be sober and vigilant, for our adversary the devil walketh about seeking whom he may to devour. Whom resist steadfast in the faith. Paul said we are not ignorant of his (i.e. Satan’s) devices. Paul was not ignorant of Satan’s devices because he obviously knew and studied our adversary. While this was true of Paul, how many of us can say the same thing?
Today changes everything. Today we as the church begin to study of spiritual Military Science. Today we start the journey in military science to study and observe the nature and tactics of our adversary. Isaiah 2:4 speaks of a time in the future where we will no longer learn or study war. However, we are not at this time yet and until that time comes, it is imperative that we do study war. the devil. Once we learn and know his strengths, weaknesses, tactics, capabilities and limitations, then God’s Army will rise in victory!
Be patient. This Spiritual Warfare Strategy series will bring us into great details of warfare, but let us allow the Holy Spirit to lay the firm foundation in which this warfare is waged. You’re not going to become a military expert overnight or with just one crash course, but as you discipline yourself daily to submit yourself to the study of war, success in warfare will become greater each day.
The reason why the greatest generals and war leaders of our country have had the greatest success on the battlefield is due to their engagement in Military Science, learning warfare. The mindset of the modern Christian believes there is no way possible that we can ever be victorious or even consider being a formidable defense to the kingdom of darkness. This mindset is carnal and unscriptural. Jesus said to his twelve disciples, “Upon this Rock I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” There’s no reason why the common everyday child of God cannot be successful in spiritual warfare as well. Not only can we be successful, WE WILL BE VICTORIOUS!
