Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea

Daily Devotional for August 27^th

So is this great and wide sea, wherein are things creeping innumerable, both small and great beasts. There go the ships: there is that leviathan, whom thou hast made to play therein. Psalm 104:25-26

Sailing is such a unique means of travel.  There is so much that can go wrong.  Unlike a car, when a ship breaks down, you cannot just pull the car to the side of the road and get out.  There are risks above the water as well as below.  The Christian life has so much been likened unto sailing at sea and rightly so.  Even the writers of the bible have continually used the imagery of sailing and ships to spiritual living.  Spiritually, God’s word tells us that there is a world above us; heaven, and a world below us; hell.  Simply put, we reside in between two worlds; two forces.    

There is an ancient sailing phrase between the devil and the deep blue sea has come to be known as being in a situation or circumstance where there is no good outcome; a condition where there is only two alternatives and both to be failure.  As a ship sitting in the water like a sitting duck with no way of escape and leviathan beneath you?  Do you ever feel that way in life?  Are there situations in life where you’re faced with options; none of which seem to be welcomed?  This is Satan’s

This scripture here reveals to us the savageness of our world.  There is risk involved with every area of life.  When you’re at sea though and the sea monster is below you, you can feel as though there’s no escape.  The devil has always desired to exaggerate his view of himself in your eyes so that you believe he is so strong and mighty that nothing can stop him.  What else is between the devil and the deep blue sea?  Jesus that’s who!  Moby Dick the captain’s pride was his downfall.  Friend you cannot defeat Satan the leviathan, but there’s one who can and has.  His name is Jesus! 

The Lord declared unto Job the limits that man has when He spoke of the great sea serpent Canst thou draw out leviathan with an hook? or his tongue with a cord which thou lettest down? Canst thou put an hook into his nose? or bore his jaw through with a thorn?  Job 41:1-2.  Jesus can hook Leviathan friend.  Don’t allow the enemy to make you feel hopeless without even any help from God.  God knows how to deliver you out of trouble.  He promised to be a present help in time of trouble.  Psalm 46:1.
