The Way of a Ship at Sea

Daily Devotional for May 9th

There be three things which are too wonderful for me, yea, four which I know not:  The way of an eagle in the air; the way of a serpent upon a rock; the way of a ship in the midst of the sea; and the way of a man with a maid.  Proverbs 30:18-19

Solomon was a man of such wisdom his fame spread throughout the land.  People would travel from other nations to hear the acclaimed words of the king of Israel.  His wisdom was not commonplace, for he had but one desire before he ascended the throne of his father David: to possess the wisdom to judge his people, Israel.

Three things intrigued Solomon.  In particular, he found the way of a ship at sea fascinating!  The fact that a ship could even float was, to him, a miracle.  That is should navigate through the sea, harnessing the power of the winds, was even more amazing.  Before the flood, God gave the design of a floating vessel to save the world unto a man named Noah.  The world may boast of its massive battleships and other sea vessels, but God’s wisdom given to man is the reason we have such technology today.

A ship at sea is much like our lives.  In three things Solomon beheld, each demonstrates an unseen power employed in advancing through life.  The same holds for your life.  You cannot and will not be able to sail through this life victoriously without the help of God.  As a ship is stationary in the water until the crew raises the sails into the air, so are we in this world.  The sails, in essence, call upon the help of an unseen force for power the ship needs and does not have within itself.

We suffer struggles in life because we attempt to sail contrary to the way God’s winds are blowing.  You can’t ask God to get behind you and give you the power to do your will.  He only empowers those who are sailing in His will!  As the wind blows in its circuits, the Holy Spirit also moves in the direction of His purpose.  If your desire is to walk in the will of God, then align your sails in the air for the wind of God to blow in His circuits.  His strength and purpose will carry you through the seas of life and give you the power you need.
