The Joy of the Lord

Daily Devotional for May 2nd

Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength. Nehemiah 8:10

Great is the mystery of a fulfilling life! Living your life with joy seems to be easy for some while a deep struggle for others.  Some people go through life and never experience the joy that Jesus came and died to provide unto us, but many people have.  It’s a wonderful thing that cannot be compare to anything else in this life.

Contrary to what the world says, joy is not the possessing of things, nor is it the experiencing of things! Joy is in a person; and that person is Jesus Christ! Did you know that sin will make you miserable?  Do you realize that sin brings depression?  Do you realize that the world’s need for drugs and alcohol is due to the need to be released from the miserable condition of their life, if it only be for just a little while?

Many people today have resorted to the drugs of the world in order to cope with life. Life is not easy friend!  Life can be a very discouraging thing unless we surrender to Jesus to pilot our life.  Jesus said The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life’ and that they might have it more abundantly. John 10:10

Doctors have prescribed medications to people to allow them to endure anxieties, nerve and mental troubles. They are crutches that bring you into a deeper bondage.  They may numb your senses but they will not remove your problems.  Only Jesus can do this!  Will you ask the Lord to come and heal your broken heart?  Do you have anxiety over traumatic events that have taken place in your life?  Drugs is not the answer!  Jesus is!  He will heal your heart; He will remove the hurt if you will call on His name today.  If you have allowed Jesus to have full access in your life, you will have no need for drugs whether they be recreational or prescription.

  1. I’m no expert but I think that if you want people to believe that God is against prescription medication to help with depression and anxiety, you should make that a whole Bible study rather than just using a few verses. There are many arguments that will stand up to your claim so it would make more sense to show proof from the word of God that he does not want us using prescription.medications for that. I understand that there are cases where people would probably not be depressed at all if they got filled with the holy spirit and were walking in the spirit and seeking God daily in faith. But to say that everyone can be free of depression simply by doing that, I cannot agree. The reason I say that is because there are people who don’t struggle with depression and anxiety and they are not even walking with God very closely. While others do walk closely with God and they still struggle. So this tells me that there must be another reason other than spiritual reasons for depression. And I don’t just mean the physical aspect of it either. I met a girl at church once who told me that she struggled with severe depression and I couldn’t believe it! I was shocked because she had a truly joyful and warm and friendly spirit. And I could only think of the verse that says, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my strength is made perfect in your weakness.” It was the strength she drew from the holy spirit to have joy and to be loving. She had the fruit of the spirit, but yet, there are still times when she doesn’t want to get out of bed and when she cries

  2. She is struggling with something that God is helping her through. Rather than remove the depression, he has used it to cause her to depend more completely in him even for the will to get out of bed. So that she knows that it is Christ who strengthens her. Some people take happiness for granted and they don’t give glory to God for the little things. But she understands where her strength cones from and she is an inspiration to others.

  3. But I don’t think it is God’s will that she always be depressed. I think it is a season. I haven’t talked to her in a long time, in fact, I don’t have any friends, but I used to struggle with severe depression but I don’t anymore and I barely even pray at all and my Bible reading is very little. So I know that the causes of depression are more than just spiritual.
