Hope for the Hopeless

Are You Born Again?

Living life without God

What is your life?  Have you ever found yourself asking the question, “Why am I here?” or “What is my purpose?”  Every one of us have asked this question at one point or another.

Life can be an exciting adventure with all of your desires fulfilled, but that is not usually the outcome for most of us.   For many people, hardships come in lives that totally devastate them to a point where they are reduced to live a life with their dreams shattered and hope deferred.  Proverbs 13:12.

Safe Havens

Every man, woman, boy or girl without exception, seeks refuge or a place to find relief.  When hard times come, humanity runs to that place they have either found relief in before, or the place parents, family, community, country, or religion has pointed them to go.

When this world used to throw curve balls at me when I was lost, my safe haven became alcohol and drugs.  I got to a point where life was just too hard to get by without it. The truth is that the lost and dying world all recognize an emptiness within the very depths of their inner beings, but that emptiness remains unsatisfied.

Engineered Design

The reason for this is really quite simple.  We are created beings who are not operating in the capacity we were designed.  Any invention that was ever invented started out with a plan.  That plan was based upon the desire or need of the inventor.  Take a hair dryer for instance.  In order for the hair dryer to be a benefit to the person who owns it, it must be plugged in.  The owner must also have a little bit of knowledge on its purpose and how to use it.

Suffer me a little here to prove a point, but how absurd would it be for someone to try to use the hair dryer for hair brush?  What if you tried to brush your teeth with it?  I know these examples seem a little farfetched, but the point is clear; the hair dryer was designed for a specific purpose.  The inventor had a particular plan for it.  It cannot function to its potential unless it is “plugged in” and working as designed.

God created you for a purpose.  Do you find yourself trying to live life in many different ways, seeking peace but finding none?  Do you ever wonder why you must jump from one fad to the next in order to try to keep our attention off of the emptiness within your heart?  Do you ever wonder why that emptiness remains unsatisfied, unfulfilled, regardless of what you do?  It’s because you were created to have relationship and fellowship with God.

When man fell to sin in the garden of Eden, man was unplugged from fellowship and relationship with God.  Where once before, there was a contentment and peace within the heart of Adam and Eve, soon was replaced by a reality of being outcast, alienated; unplugged from God.  That unplugged, or alienated feeling drives us to seek for joy.  The inner man is crying on the inside, but no satisfaction can come until we are restored to our purpose.

This World’s Unsatisfying Water

In the gospel of John chapter 4, we read about a woman of Samaria who came to a well that Jacob, a patriarch of the nation of Israel, had dug centuries before.  Jesus had directed the disciples to go into town and buy meat, for he “must needs go through Samaria.’ This verse declares to us that Jesus saw her need a great distance away and would go and satisfy that need.  Jesus is still doing that same thing today friend.

From the scripture, we learn that this woman came with a much greater need than to fill an empty water pot.   She had no doubt, walked from her home with a need for water for herself and the man she was living with, but Jesus saw something else.

As she approaches the well, she sees Jesus sitting on the well.  Jesus, a Jew, concerned about a Samaritan woman, was definitely out of the ordinary.  He says unto her “If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.”

Have you ever found yourself attempting to satisfy the longing in your soul with earthly things?  Mankind cannot discern between the longing of his soul, and how to fulfill that longing.  Drugs can’t satisfy, alcohol cannot touch it, sexual sin and lust won’t sooth it; only Jesus Christ can satisfy!  This woman had tried to find joy in men relationships and found it to be in vain.  What are you running to?

Jesus said if you knew the gift of God…  Most of the world have no idea of the gift of God.  If they did, they would run to Jesus!  The gift of God will cause you to never thirst for the things of the world ever again.  Not to say that our bodies will never need sustenance again, but that longing in our souls will be satisfied because it is the soul that is so empty without Jesus!  Your emptiness is in the soul.  Nothing of this world can satisfy it.

Never Thirst Again

Jesus continued by saying “Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: but whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

The world will attempt to convince you that your need can be met in the world.  This cannot be further from the truth.  Jesus has satisfied every longing in my soul!  He wants to do the same for you!  Why don’t you call out to Jesus today and ask Him to forgive, cleanse, and to be the Lord and Saviour of your soul and life!  He will come in!  If you will receive Him today by faith, He will satisfy every longing!

The woman left the well that day without her water pot.  Why?  It was because her soul (the inner water pot) had been filled.  She left to tell all who she came in contact with the things Jesus had done for her.  Once you find the peace that Jesus can and will give, you will forsake all other things you attempted to find peace, joy and contentment in.

You will truly never thirst for anything else but Jesus…ever again!
