What Manner of Spirit
Daily Devotional for February 24th
And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did? But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. Luke 9:54-55
Often times in our walk with the Lord, we can misunderstand spiritual truths. Sometimes we even try to justify why feel the way we do by searching for biblical examples to fit our moods and attitudes. Our walk with the Lord is so impactful to the world that the devil will attempt twist our understanding of scripture so we will accomplish his will.
Does Satan use God’s people at times? Yes, sadly he does. How does he do this? He does it by turning the scriptures in his favor. James and John were great men who followed the Lord. They were originally disciples of John the Baptist. This comment was more than likely the reason why they were called sons of thunder.
In the heat of the moment, we can allow the influence of another spirit to take control of us. Although a spirit cannot possess a believer who trusts and lives for the Lord, demonic spirits can affect and influence us. These two brothers had just gone into a village to prepare for Jesus’ last days. The Samaritans did not receive the disciples of Jesus. Like James and John, you and I will be misunderstood, mocked, persecuted, and maybe even put to death. This does not give us reason to ask God to send fire down to consume those who are not willing to receive the gospel. We must live with God’s love in our hearts.
Jesus did not come to destroy men, but to save them. We must not allow demonic influences to control us to where we do not walk in love toward the lost, even if they speak all manner of evil against us. What manner of spirit is controlling you? Is it the Holy Spirit? Is it another spirit? Are you angry and ready to have nothing to do with those who do not speak to or accept you or other Christians? We must be controlled by the Holy Spirit and none another. The last thing the Lord wants is for evil to be spoken of Jesus, His ways or us; the disciples of Jesus.
