Quenching Fiery Darts
Daily Devotional for February 21st
Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. Ephesians 6:16
When we think of faith, we think of the fruit of the Spirit that dares to believe in God. Even more often we think of faith as the main component required to receive the promises God has made to us. Very seldom, if ever, do we think of faith as a defensive form of protection, but that is exactly what the apostle Paul is saying here in this verse.
When facing the devil in spiritual battle, faith is our shield. Faith is our protection. Fiery darts are an image of Satan’s long-distance attacks flung into the air, hoping to make their mark on us. In ancient times, arrows were wrapped with rags, soaked in oil, lit on fire, and shot from an archer’s bow. The arrow was not meant to thrust through and kill as with an arrow head; it was meant to start a consuming fire that would destroy entire houses and lands.
Satan’s fiery darts are designed to ultimately burn your entire world. Most of the arrows sent from his bow are accusations, lies, bitterness, backbitings, jealousy, envying, etc. All of these seek to burn inside until you are totally consumed by them. How does faith defend against these destructive missiles?
When wicked darts are shot toward us, the first thing we usually do is accept them. But God has given us the shield of faith to quench these darts. Not just some of them, but all. Quench means to extinguish or put out a fire. Steadfast faith in the Lord and His Word will block many of his attacks. When Satan whispers you won’t receive deliverance or healing or anything else God has promised, faith acts as a shield to quench these deceptive darts. Strong faith in God’s promises will not accept the enemy’s lies.
When we allow Satan to penetrate our minds and convince us of his words over what God has said, then we have allowed a fiery dart to hit us. Once it impacts, the destruction has only begun. But the shield of faith will extinguish every lie, scheme, or method the devil devises. When we put our trust in the Lord, God Himself will be our shield and buckler.
