Remove the Ought

Daily Devotional for February 12th

Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.  Matthew 5:23-24

Do you realize that your relationship with the world is as important as your relationship with God? Do you realize that, in order for our fellowship with God to remain thriving, that our fellowship with man must also thrive?  In this life, in our interactions with people, there are so many opportunities for the devil to drive wedges in relationships and friendships. Marriages also have to continually root out problems that arise through harmful words spoken or actions that drove separation between spouses.

Most of the time when we have arguments or conflicts in relationships, we tend to avoid resolving them and attempt to go on in our relationship with God. This cannot be done. As a matter of fact, this is one of the greatest reasons why we cannot worship in Spirit and in Truth. God wants our worship, but He more importantly wants us to make amends with those we have an ought with.

This scripture teaches that when you come to worship, there will be a prompting about something the Lord wants you to deal with before you offer your gift.  This is one of the ways God deals with us. In other words, the Holy Spirit will reveal whatever unresolved circumstance that may need to be reconciled before your gift will be accepted. This teaches us that we cannot offer worship to God when there are things God deals with us about. We must deal with wrongs that have occurred in relationships, friendships. We must leave our gift without offering it, then go and be reconciled to the person we have wronged or has wronged us.

This issue is one of the greatest reasons why we cannot worship.  Have you attempted to go on with your Christian life ignoring the prompting of the Holy Spirit to make right a strained friendship?  Do you have need to restore a relationship?   If so, this could be the reason why your spiritual growth is in hold. Go and make right that circumstance. The end result God desires is peace.  This scripture does not choose sides on who is in the right or wrong, but simply to make peace and lay that problem to rest.  Once you do, you can enter back and offer your gift to God and it will be accepted.
