Is Jesus Really God? Pt. 4 – Bible Study Series By Bro Jimbo Braden

This is the Fourth part of a series; Is Jesus really God?

Now to another claim where the Jehovah’s Witnesses and Muslim’s say Jesus is not God.

Jesus said to her,

“Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.”

They will say, see how can Jesus be God if He says, to my God and your God. But remember Sola Scriptura so what about when the Father calls Jesus God. Let’s turn to the book of Hebrews ch 1:5.  The writer goes through a series of quotations from the Old Testament but he says the Father says these things about the Son and it goes;

5For to which of the angels did He ever say:                        He Didn’t say it to any angel

“You are My Son,

Today I have begotten You”?                                Jesus was begotten at His  incarnation

And again:

“I will be to Him a Father,

And He shall be to Me a Son”?                Clearly this is the Father talking about Jesus

6But when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says:            At the second coming

“Let all the angels of God worship Him.”                                            Jesus receives worship

7And of the angels He says:                                                    Now the Father says to the angels

“Who makes His angels spirits

And His ministers a flame of fire.”

8But to the Son He says:                                                               Now the Father says to the Son

“Your throne, O God, is forever and ever;                                Now Father calls Jesus God

A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom.

9You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness;

Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You               Now the Father calls Himself God

With the oil of gladness more than Your companions.”

“You, Lord, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth,
And the heavens are the work of Your hands.
11They will perish, but You remain;
And they will all grow old like a garment;
12Like a cloak You will fold them up,
And they will be changed.
But You are the same,
And Your years will not fail.”

Remember in Philippians where the Father gives Jesus a name that is above every name and what is that name? “Lord” and we learned that they used the Greek Septuagint, meaning the Greek Old Testament along with they never translated the Hebrew name of God “Yahweh” so they just said “Lord” in Greek “κύριος”

This will be important when we quote it again. Back to verse 10 the Father calls Jesus Lord but remember this chapter is mostly quotations from the Old Testament and this verse is being quoted from Psalm 102:25 Greek Septuagint it reads;

Note: the Father is speaking to the son according to the writer of Hebrews

The Father not only calls Jesus God  but here He calls Him “Yahweh”. So when the Greek translates Yahweh from Hebew,  you see “Lord” in Psalm 102:25. Now I want to be clear the Father is not talking to Himself. He is talking to the Son who is a different person. But made of the same essence as the Father. This is the one being of God called “Yahweh.”

Now Jehovah’s Witnesses say, Jesus can’t be God because the bible says no one has seen God! This is true so let’s read

 18No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him. John 1:18

They have a good point! But we also have another testament called the old testament. And they see God all the time let’s read

Job 42:5

“I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear; But now my eye sees You;

Genesis 16:13

Then she called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, “You are a God who sees”; for she said, “Have I even remained alive here after seeing Him?”

Genesis 32:30

So Jacob named the place Peniel, for he said, “I have seen God face to face, yet my life has been preserved.”

Exodus 24:10

and they saw the God of Israel; and under His feet there appeared to be a pavement of sapphire, as clear as the sky itself.

Exodus 24:11

Yet He did not stretch out His hand against the nobles of the sons of Israel; and they saw God, and they ate and drank.

Judges 13:22

So Manoah said to his wife, “We will surely die, for we have seen God.”

What are we to do now. The bible says no one has seen God at anytime. Then it says, all kinds of people have seen God face to face. This is because no one has seen God the Father but they have seen God the Son.

King James Bible

No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

New American Standard Bible

No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him.

New International Version

No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.

Note: when speaking of Jesus being begotten, its speaking of His incarnation when He was born of Mary.

So the bible says no one has seen the Father at anytime.

But they have seen the begotten God who is Jesus.

Then it goes on to say Jesus has made the Father known

All the times people have seen God in the Old Testament it was Jesus making the Father known and I often think of when Jesus said; Before Abraham was I AM. Remember when moses was on the mountain of God and He told Moses to tell the people, I AM sent you .

Jesus says;

John 6:46

“Not that anyone has seen the Father, except the One who is from God; He has seen the Father.

John 12:45

“He who sees Me sees the One who sent Me.

John 14:9

Jesus said to him, “Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

John 14:7

“If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; from now on you know Him, and have seen Him.”

And I want to leave saying this that the Bible says that Jesus is  the brightness of the Father’s glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power. Hebrews 1:3 and think of this when you look up at the sun did you know that no one has seen the sun that you are actually seeing about 8 minutes in the past for no one has seen the sun we just see the rays of the sun which the sun represents the Father and the rays or (light) off the sun represents Jesus (because he is  the brightness of the Father’s glory.) Just like when we see the sun 8 minutes in the past. Seeing the (expressed image of his person the Father) and the warmth off the sun? Of course is the Holy Spirit. The three are one, of the same essence. Take away the light there would be no sun take away the heat there would be no sun these three are one. who is called “Yahweh”

And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding, that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life. 1 John 5:20
