Finishing Our Course
Daily Devotional for December 30th
For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: 2 Timothy 4:6-7
There’s something very special about the calling of God in an individual life. We become so overwhelmed that the Almighty God of Heaven would not only look our way, but desire to use us in this great plan of salvation to others. There is nothing greater in this life than when God gives us an assignment, that we fulfil that assignment.
As we have established, the word course is in reference to a journey, specifically a journey at sea. The captain of the ship surveys the map and then charts his desired travel path accordingly. Simply put, God has an extraordinary plan for your life. He has in His wisdom created you in such a unique way that you similarly have a unique purpose. No one else can fulfil that purpose but you. It’s a course that has been charted for you. He only asks that you sail and so finish this course.
The blessings of sailing God’s course cannot be put into words. It must be experienced in order to be fully known. Whether your calling is to teach, sing, preach etc., find out God’s will; this charted course and run it with joy because you are never to sail these seas alone. Jesus, the Master of the Seas will be with you to help you finish the course He’s set for you.
Paul would finally reveal to the young preacher Timothy that he had fought a good fight, he had finished his course and had kept the faith. In this course, you will be fought. Like winds that attempt to drive the ship off course, Satan will attempt to dissuade you from God’s purpose. Of all things, your faith will also be tested. The devil will war against your faith because it is your faith that overcomes the world. 1 John 5:4.
What a provoking statement of boldness for Paul to say I have finished my course. This without doubt means that if you will continue to submit yourself to the will of God, then one day, like Paul, you’ll be able to say with confidence “I have finished my course.” One day we will see the Glory lands of Heaven. One day soon we will see the port. One day soon we will tie off to the celestial harbor in the sky. I’m looking forward to that day!
