Is Jesus Really God?
This is the first part of a series; Is Jesus Really God?
By Jimbo Braden
Many people in the world say that they believe in Jesus. There are so many different religions in this world, which one is right? They all claim to have the right belief, so which one am I supposed to listen to? I mean, have you ever thought about it? It is my wish that we could dive into the scripture together and read the scriptures for what they say, and not what other people say, it says. We will allow the bible to speak for itself. We will read different passages from the bible and look at different views from other religions as well. My friend, it is not my wish to put anyone down or to hurt anyone. As a follower of Christ, it is my only wish that you will keep reading this and ask yourself if what I am saying is true. The writings that I am giving you, are my own thoughts, and others as well, they are not infallible, although God’s word is infallible. I am a human being very capable of making mistakes. Now the bible says;
All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:16)
So, I am very willing to be corrected, but at the same time, my wish is that others will be corresponding as well. So, if you’re wondering what I believe in, well, I am a Trinitarian. Yes, I believe Jesus is God. But before you quit reading, listen to this Apostle John says this:
Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of god; because many false prophets have gone out into the world. (1 John 4:1)
What does he mean when he says; test the spirits to see if they are of God? What one must do is take the teaching of Jesus and the apostles that are found in the bible and apply them to all these doctrines that are in the world. When we begin to test the spirits or doctrines, we will be faced with a decision. Which path will we take? Will it be Jesus, or religion? What will you choose? And if you don’t believe in the trinity, at least understand the doctrine before you say it’s not real or correct. I myself don’t believe in other religions but I will take the time to study their doctrine to test it to see if it’s of God. When Paul was in Thessalonica preaching Jesus was the Christ, the Jews were not persuaded but became envious and gathered a mob. But when they arrived in Berea it says:
When they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews. These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so. (Acts 17:10)
One might say, does it really matter if I believe in the trinity? I mean, after all the bible says who ever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. But which Jesus are you calling on? Let’s look at it this way, a few weeks ago my sister and I were looking on Ancestry.com, trying to find out who our great great grandpa was. When you type the name in, it might pull up 20 different people with the same first and last name. But your like, which one is mine? You can’t just say, ah I’ll just pick this one. No, you want your real grandpa. But the good thing is they have records, were they lived, how many people lived in the house, were they worked, when they were born, when they died, so on and so on. You get the point. Based on these truths, you can find who you are looking for. You see, the bible is the same way, God has given us his holy word; the bible, and gave us truths about his Son, about we’re He came from, what He did, who He was, and who He is now.
For if he who comes preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or if you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you have not accepted-you may well put up with it! (2 Corinthians 11:4)
I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed. (Galatians 1:6)
So here we see that other people had been preaching another Jesus! Even another gospel! The apostle had to deal with many false prophets that were a counterfeit of the true teachings of the gospel, and the real Christ. Sadly, they are still here. It is very important for a Christian to have discernment, but how does a person acquire such a thing. First of all, ask God for it. The bible says to cry out for discernment and lift up your voice for understanding. (Proverbs 2:3). Secondly, make sure you set aside quiet time with God.
Before we begin, I need to address the Trinity. The belief is that Christian’s believe that there is [one God!] not two gods, not three gods, but [one God!] This is called monotheism
It says in (Isaiah 40:18) (To whom then will you liken God? Or what likeness will you compare to him) A person needs to realize that you can’t liken God to anything! Or compare God to anything! There is only One of God. Non created, no beginning, no ending, self existing, infinite God, impossible to think about with our human minds. But he gives us His holy word, the things he wants us to understand. That there is only one God!!!
Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel, And his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts: I am the First and I am the Last Besides Me there is no God!!! (Isaiah 44:6)
…Before Me there was no God formed, Nor shall there be after Me. (isaiah 43:10)
“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one! You shall love the LORD your God with all your with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. (Deuteronomy 6:4)
But one needs to read the book of Isaiah because there is far more than just these few verses here. But then again how many times does God have to say it. But it is a good thing to read, especially chapters 40 through 48. Now we know that there is only one God that exist! None before Him or none after Him, that was formed!!! That’s what God said… This is crucial, that one must know that there is only one God. “Yahweh” Hebrew name for God. But what about when I said, Jesus is God? Ok, in the bible it speaks about 3 persons that are called God, and it is The Father, The Son which is Jesus, and The Holy Spirit, We will look at these scriptures later. But now, a look at the Trinity the one God.
Note: different beliefs
- Monotheism: [the belief is, that there is one
Christians, Jews, Muslims all have something in common, and that is, there is One God.
- Polytheism: [the belief in, or worship of more than one God]
- Henotheism: [worship of a single god and not denying the existence of other deities.]
There is [one being of God], (that is called Yahweh) Not 3 gods
and In [that one Being], there are (3 Persons) Not 3 beings that are, (coequal and coeternal persons)
namely, the (Father, the Son, and the Spirit)
I have heard theologian’s say, when they speak of the Trinity.
There are (one what) and [three who’s.]
The (one what) is the (Being, or Essence of God);
the [Three Who’s] are the [Father, Son, and Spirit]
and do not get the [Who’s] and the (What) mixed up.
I know it is hard to take in because:
I am a [human being], (that is called Jim Bo)
I have [one being] and (I am one person)
God is different. God is the [one being] (Who exist as 3 persons)
Which are distinct persons from each other.
But you see I am created, everything we see has been created. But God is uncreated. So we can’t put God, on the same playing field as us, [created beings] having [1 being] and (1 person.) Remember [one God, one being], [not three gods or three beings] and they are not the same person, this is called modalism. Were the Father sometimes, wants to be the son, or wants to be the Holy Spirit. Christians have never believed this, also known as modalism this is found in oneness pentecostal. Which I have never really understood. That Jesus would pray to Himself Which I have heard Jehovah’s Witnesses and Muslims say. This is what most people say about the trinity, that don’t believe in the trinity. This couldn’t be further from the truth, for the definition of the trinity. Thus far does the trinity contradict what we have read? Remember if God said there was no god formed before Him or after Him and there is only one God this is a standard we must apply.
My prayer is that you will continue in the coming series to see if Jesus is really God.
