Approaching the Lord Correctly
Daily Devotional for October 5th
…Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. 1 Peter 5:5
It’s interesting how our attitude effects every area of our life. The way we approach people will have either a positive or negative effect. Our speech can be absolutely pure, but the way in which it is delivered makes all the difference in the world. Wholesome words spoken in anger can take on a totally different meaning. The way we conduct ourselves is all driven by what is in our hearts.
Peter makes a clear case regarding our attitude toward each other. We are to show forth humility toward one another. Pride is a very destructive thing within the heart. Pride is evidenced in the way we speak. The root of pride springs up in a heart that sees only the good in themselves. Pride in the heart is also evidenced in the attitude that feels as though they deserve certain things from the Lord.
The way we approach the Lord is no different. Peter gives his reason for humility by declaring how God resists the proud. We cannot receive of God when we come with a prideful attitude. Pride found in the heart will cause the Lord to resist us. This is a truth most people do not understand. If we come to God as though He owes us something, then we will be very discouraged at the results.
But when we come to the Lord, we must come humbly knowing that God gives grace unto the humble. Coming humbly before Him in prayer is the recognition of our dependency on Him. Humility also shows that we see ourselves in the right way. God knows that we are in desperation without Him. He promised grace to the humble. Are you in need of God’s grace? Come to God humbly, He will hear and give grace to you. God will honor your humility and will give you the needed grace.
