Be Still and Know that I am God
Daily Devotional for September 6th
Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. Psalm 46:10
We live in such a fast paced and busy world. Life has a tendency to program us to constantly be moving, working and toiling. Most of the time, our day comes to an end without taking the time to get alone with the Lord in prayer to seek Him concerning leadership and direction. Because of this, we tend to wander outside of the Lord’s direction.
As a shepherd, the Psalmist David understood the importance of daily leading and daily following. David knew that sheep were easily led astray. The shepherd would lead the sheep unto fields to graze, rest, and to streams to drink. Whether it be weariness, heat, storm, trouble or some other adverse circumstance, the shepherd may choose to keep the sheep in waters and pastures for long periods of time. The Lord spoke to Joseph in a dream to flee into Egypt and dwell there. Matthew 2:13 They would dwell there until the death of Herod. How many times was Joseph and Mary tempted to return to their home land? They had to wait until the Lord had given them direction and instruction to leave. Matthew 2:19
In our effort to walk and please God, we tend to get ahead of the Lord. Waiting on the Lord is one of our greatest weaknesses. The sheep may become restless and wonder why the shepherd has not called them forth to lead them on, but the shepherd knows. The older sheep have learned to wait upon the calling forth of the shepherd. Those sheep had simply learned to graze and rest in the fields awaiting the shepherd’s call to follow on.
How often do we find ourselves wondering, “Lord, why are you not leading me?” With the tendency to believe we need always be on the move, the enemy can use this to lead us away from the place God has never led us from. There’s one thing for certain, it takes faith to be still. If the Lord is not leading you, chances are you are already in the place He wants you to be. If we could only be still and know that He is God! God is faithful. If He wants you somewhere you are not currently, He will call you forth. Otherwise, be still and know that He is God.
