Zeal Has Eaten Me Up

Daily Devotional for August 21st

And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father’s house an house of merchandise. And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up.  John 2:16-17

Zeal?  What is zeal anyway?  Zeal comes from the Greek word dzay’-los which means heat; ardor.  Ardor means passion, vehemence, fervor.  Simply put, zeal is a fieriness that pushes us; motivates us to action.  Biblically speaking, zeal is the life of God inside you pushing you to pursue Him and His will.  How do we acquire zeal?  John the Baptist declared that one mightier that he would come after him and would baptize with the Holy Ghost and with fire!  This Holy fire of God burns, consumes, eats up everything in your life.  Zeal is the fire of God that sets our hearts ablaze.  There’s nothing like it.  The prophet Jeremiah attempted to stop prophesying at one time but revealed he could not because the word was as a burning fire shut up in my bones. Jeremiah 20:9

From this scripture, the disciples were reminded of Psalm 69:9 For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me.  First of all, zeal for God comes from being in God’s house; more specifically His presence.  The presence of God burns within our very beings giving us the zeal to go and fulfil His will in the world.  Zeal also causes us to make wrongs right.  If you notice, Jesus entered into the temple and corrected the wrongs in the temple and set the house back in order.  Do you realize that if zeal of God is in you, then that zeal will cause you to forsake sin and walk uprightly?  Conversely, if zeal is absent in you, then sin will be permitted in your life.

Zeal eats up everything that is not of God in our lives.  The things that trouble the Lord will trouble you.  If there is sin abounding around you, it will be an affront to you.  Also, the things that God desires will be the desire of your heart; a burden for the lost, desire to see people delivered, healed, and set free.  Are you on fire for God?  Do you burn on the inside with a raging flame to live for God?  Are you zealous about the Lord?  Do you realize that zeal is something that each of us need in our christian lives?  Zeal is vital to your prayer life, your worship, study in the word and your vocation/calling of God in your life.  You simply will not continue on without zeal.  If you understand that your zeal; your passion for God is what fuels everything you do for God, then you must come to a place where you ask God to restore the zeal for God in you life.

Have you noticed times in your life where you were on fire for God and desired only the things God desired?  Then other times it seemed as if you didn’t have enough spiritual strength to even pray, witness or read the word of God?  Why does this happen?  If this has happened to you, then you have lost the zeal of God.  Many people are experiencing a lack of desire for the things of God and it’s due to a lack of God’s zeal.  Does this describe you?  Ask the Lord to restore your zeal; your desire.  It comes from being in His presence.  Nothing else will acquire it.

  1. I want this everyday of my life. Every word in this post is true. Tragically, much of Christian life today is emotion-based, fleshly worship and message engineered to create emotional highs. There is no real transformation within. May the fire of God burn always in us, even if we stand alone, yet with Him.
Press on dear brother! Praying for you and your ministry.

    • Thank you so much for your continued prayers for us! Your fellowship has been such a rock in this sinking sand I’ve been going through. It’s an honor to serve with you.
