The Stand of a Mighty Man
Daily Devotional for May 25th
And after him was Shammah the son of Agee the Hararite. And the Philistines were gathered together into a troop, where was a piece of ground full of lentiles: and the people fled from the Philistines. But he stood in the midst of the ground, and defended it, and slew the Philistines: and the LORD wrought a great victory. 2 Samuel 23:11-12
Great victories come from great warriors! Great warriors are made from greatness of character! We have seen down through the years a grit and determination; a resolve in the heart of God’s people. This type of resolve is not a natural character trait inside of you, but something God builds and develops within you. It is forged through resistance. It is character made through the fire. To continue in your christian life, you must allow the Lord to develop a relentlessness inside you.
As we continue looking into the lives of the king’s mighty men, we come to Shammah. Shammah, another of David’s mighty men, made one of the most daring decisions in battle. He chose to stand against a troop when everyone else fled. Territory is always vital in war. It’s a battle of turf and who will occupy the ground. Has the enemy attempted to enter your home, children, family? What is your response? What do you do? We must stand and defend the territory God has given us and not allow the enemy to overtake it. It’s yours. Don’t allow the enemy to take it from you. At what point will you stand in your field and boldly say to the kingdom of darkness, “Enough is enough! I choose starting right now, to defend what God has given me!”
What does it require inside you in order to stand relentlessly? Should we wonder where Shammah got his boldness from? The name Shammah simply means ruin; devastation. Shammah was the son of Agee the Hararite. The word Hararite means mountaineer. Agee, Shammah’s father, was a mountaineer. A mountaineer is someone who climbs mountains. The very idea of being raised in the home of a mountain climber provokes the thoughts of a son being forged at an early age to face things bigger than yourself. God uses people in your life to build character that will make you a fighter for the kingdom of God. Shammah would live up to his given name by bringing ruin and devastation to the armies of the Philistines. There is also a warrior inside of you friend.
Outnumbered? As long as you look at circumstances from the carnal mind then you’ll always see yourself as outnumbered and defeated. But with God with you, you’re never outnumbered and have no need to retreat. There is more at stake than you can ever imagine. Shammah counted the cost and realized what was at stake. The Philistines must have been laughing at the sight of one soldier with the audacity to resist them. But through that one soldier, Shammah postured himself in a place of faith. Will you choose to stand and defend your piece of ground? It not only takes boldness to stand, but faith as well. Numbers are irrelevant when God is with you.
Are you tired of the devil pushing his way into your life? When you choose to not budge another inch, then you have taken a great step in allowing this trait of a mighty man inside your heart. Satan doesn’t want you to stand up to him. He will even deceive you into thinking you have no right or authority to do so. Paul declared in Ephesians to stand against the wiles of the devil! And having done all, to stand! Ephesians 6:13 & 14. Refuse to retreat! Do not surrender! Stand against the armies of darkness in faith. God honored his faith and moved through him and wrought a great victory. Once you choose to stand by faith in the midst of your ground and defend it, God will come on the scene in your battle. He will bring about a great victory!
