The Skill of a Mighty Man
Daily Devotional for May 23rd
These be the names of the mighty men whom David had: The Tachmonite that sat in the seat, chief among the captains; the same was Adino the Eznite: he lift up his spear against eight hundred, whom he slew at one time. 2 Samuel 23:8
Adino the Eznite! He was a great leader of king David. As a matter of fact, he was chief among the captains; meaning he was a leader of leaders. As U.S. Navy pilots have call signs that describe their character or their skill, David’s mighty men were the same. The name Adino the Eznite is translated the strong spear or sharp spear. The title Tachmonite describes him as tactical or skillful. His real name is Jashobeam as revealed in 1 Chronicles 11:11.
The Spear was an interesting weapon made with a long shaft with a sharp point on one end. It was a far more versatile weapon than a sword. The spear could be used to block an enemies’ attacks. It was long making it very effective to reach a longer range than those who wielded a sword. Because of a sword’s shorter length, it could not combat against the spear. The spear was also used as a throwing weapon like a javelin. When you think of being a soldier in God’s army, do you ever realize that as Jashobeam was skillful enough to defeat 800 men at one time, that you have the same ability? It’s not your ability though, it’s God’s anointing working in you. You do, however, have ability and weapons God will teach you to use. Don’t think for a moment that the kingdom of God does not have effective weapons. The weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty…!
In your quest to serve God, the Lord’s calling in your life will reveal certain and unique anointings that He will use you in more than others. The Lord will cause you to specialize in certain areas of mastery. As Jashobeam was no doubt established in all weapons of war, his specialized skill was the spear. Has the Lord honed you in certain areas of your spiritual life? Do you find the Holy Spirit drawing you into a specific area of ministry or spiritual warfare? If so, then His desire is that you become deeply rooted and knowledgeable in that certain area so that you can not only be used greatly in that capacity, but also to teach what you’ve learned.
God’s soldiers do not seek vain glory. They seek honor of the king. They seek to gain ground for the kingdom of God. And although they may not be on display for the world to recognize, they are recognized in Hell. The demon who spoke through the sons of Sceva declared “Jesus I know, and Paul I know…” The king’s mighty men seek the blood of the mighty. They are not satisfied until the strongest of Satan’s hordes are annihilated. As all of Israel knew Goliath by name, the kingdom of Hell knew Paul. The king’s mighty men are not satisfied with defeating foot soldiers. They desire to bring down kingdoms. Paul was skillful and effective in what God had called him to be. He brought down one of Satan’s principality spirits in Philippi. They are not satisfied until the strongest of Satan’s hordes are annihilated. We must win the lost! Will you allow the King to make you into one of His mighty men?
