Dangerous Rocks in the Soil
Daily Devotional for May 8th
They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away. Luke 8:13
The parables of Jesus reveal so much to us concerning, not only the struggles of this life, but also the struggles in our own hearts. His teaching goes so much deeper than the issues, though. They get to the core of who we are and the very intentions of our heart. Jesus used these parables to really get to the bottom of these issues that will destroy our walk with the Lord.
This parable reveals the ground in which the Word of God is sown in. It’s a parable of the hearts. Did you know that your heart has issues in it just like ground that contains hard ground, rocks and thorns? All of these things are causes of spiritual destruction.
In particularly, those who received among the rocks are those who heard the gospel, received it, but yet something devastating took place. Many of us have so many issues in our hearts that we do not realize. Our heart can become so hardened through life that very little seems to penetrate through it. Sometimes a hard heart is a safety mechanism to us because we have been hurt so badly. But here, the rocks in the heart prevented the Word from growing deep into it, therefore no roots were able to reach far enough to prevent destruction.
Roots are by far the most important part of a plant or tree. First the roots draw the minerals from the soil. The tree that produces fruit is evidence that not only the seed was good, but also the ground in which it was sown was good also. But in time of temptation or great storms, the roots are the part of the tree which holds the tree firm. If there are rocks in your heart, then spiritual destruction may just be a storm away. If there are places in your heart where you have not allowed the roots of God’s word to get into, then those same places could result in your falling away.
Ask the Lord to reveal those stony places in you that may prevent you from surviving the storms of life. He is faithful! The bibles says He is able to keep you from falling and to present you faultless…Jude 1:24. Instead of viewing the Lord’s dealing with the rocks grudgingly, we must realize that the Lord is simply trying to remove the things that will cause you to fall away.
