Our Ship’s Compass
Daily Devotional for April 2nd
And landing at Syracuse, we tarried there three days. And from thence we fetched a compass, and came to Rhegium: and after one day the south wind blew, and we came the next day to Puteoli: Acts 28:12-13
As we are all well aware, the compass was one of the greatest tools invented. Sailors used compasses to guide them through the vast seas. although the sun is a dependable guide, the sun could not be seen at night or overcast skies. The compass is made to have a magnetic pull to “True North.” Even though sailors lost sense of direction, the compass was able to keep them informed of their direction.
The same is true of our lives. Although we do not have this type of compass to guide our spiritual lives, we do have a sure compass to guide us. Every Christian has the word of God and the Spirit of God to guide us. Psalms tells us that Thy word is a lamp unto my feet… (Psalms 119:105) The word of God shines the light on our direction through this wicked and dark world. Jesus said he (the Spirit) would guide you into all truth… (John 16:13)
After Paul’s shipwreck at Melita, they desired to obtain a compass in order to guide them to their destination. Did you know that most people today are sailing through life’s waters with no natural sense of direction and wind up going wherever the wind takes them. Their lives will end in destruction. Without the word of God and the Spirit of God, we will not know the way either. The word of God gives us our heading. God knows how to navigate you around these rough waters. We must also hear from the Lord to know when to launch and when to set anchor in the harbor.
With the Word and Spirit of God as our guides, we cannot err. If we do err, it is because have chosen to go in a different direction. Do you go to the word of God to guide you? Do you ask God to guide you with His Spirit? Are you living in a place where you can hear the Spirit of God when He speaks? These are necessary to know how to navigate through this life. If you will seek guidance through these things, God will guide you around the jagged rocks of Satan and to the destinations He desires you to go. We will not sink in the depths. We can truly sail victorious through this life!
