Life Beyond Our Cross
Daily Devotional for March 28th
And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. Luke 9:23
In our quest to follow Jesus, there are a few things He asks of us that can seem very hard. Some of those things might even be perceived as unfair. We wonder why the Lord would ask us to do certain things. We examine the hardships and persecutions that come simply because we have chosen to make Jesus the Lord of our life. But we must remember that Jesus always has your best interests at heart.
Such is the case with His instruction for us to take up our cross. The cross is not an object of beauty. The cross is not thing of comfort. We simply cannot understand or register in our own minds the good that would result from taking up our cross. Although there is no physical cross that we carry, it is important know that taking up the cross means that we surrender our will, our lives, our purpose, and ask the Lord to work His will in us. When we do this, something supernatural takes place!
The irony that Satan wants to keep hid from us when deciding to take up our cross is quite surprising though. It’s the life that comes on the other side of the cross. If you will decide to take up your cross and follow Jesus, you will find a life; a power; a resurrection that will come to you. If you notice, Jesus said that, to follow Him, we must take up our cross. This simply put means that following Jesus is on the other side of death. It means that a true follower of Jesus follows Him in resurrection life even in this world.
A cross stood in Jesus’ path to fulfill the Father’s will. God’s resurrection power was a result of Jesus’ obedience to go to the cross. A cross stands in our path as well. Instead of seeing the dread of the cross, we should rather see the resurrection life that results from our cross. This makes taking up the cross a welcome when we realize that the power of God flows through our lives when we surrender our lives to Him. Although the cross is a dreadful thing, there is great joy if you will just look beyond it. Therefore, we should not hesitate to bear the cross because the resurrection life of God will flow in and through us when we do.
