Renew a Right Spirit Within Me
Daily Devotional for March 14th
Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice. Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Psalm 51:8-10
In the strains and struggles of this life, there are times when we allow temptations, cares and concerns to pull us away from our close relationship with the Lord. Sometimes we have fallen completely on our face in spiritual failure simply because we gave in to something we thought we could find pleasure in, if only for a moment. While many people are taught that sin does not effect a child of God after salvation, this could not be further from the truth.
So what happens to us on the inside when we sin? Does sin cause something change within us? Absolutely. As venom injected into the body through a snake bite causes the body to breakdown and enter into trauma, sin does the same thing to our spirit. When we sin, a foreign destructive force enters into the spirit causing devastating effects. As sickness in the body causes symptoms of that sickness, sin has a power that brings forth symptoms of moral decline and the desire to sin. It will not stop until death comes.
When David sinned with Bathsheba, it did not end with adultery. Sin always causes shame which brings forth fig leaves in some form or another. David’s initial sin brought on the need to hide his sin. Sin has a nature of its own. Habitual sin is evidence that sin has not been dealt with in your life and has been allowed to reign over you. It is at this point David cried in this Psalm for God to renew a right spirit within him. Do you recognize when your spirit changes from one of desiring God to one of desiring sin? When this happens, it is because sin has been allowed, not only in you, but to continue to abide within you. This is why your motivation for God changes. At this point there is a need to ask God to renew a rig ht spirit.
There is no way to overcome or continue to deal with sin in your life on our own. We cannot live a victorious life in Christ by continuing to practice sin. Sin will lord over us bringing us into its bondage and destroying our faith. A right spirit can only take place through purging of sin out of us. God is the only one who has the power to forgive and purge sin out of us. This can only be accomplished through the blood of Jesus Christ. You will know sin has been purged out of your life when a right spirit is renewed. If you’ve noticed a moral decline in your life, then the only answer is to call out, as David, to the Lord and ask Him to purge, clean, blot out, and renew. He will be faithful to do just that.
