Prepared For Giants
Daily Devotional for March 1st
Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God. David said moreover, The Lord that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. I Samuel 17:36-37
Giants! Is there an image that’s any worse than this? Why does it appear that we are always facing troubles much greater than our ability? Why doesn’t the Lord allow small trials that we could handle on our own? We view giants much the same way all of the men of Israel did; when they saw Goliath, they fled from him in terror. Our natural instinct is to run, not stand and fight. That is, unless we know that we will bring down the giant.
God will teach you the importance of trusting Him. We often become frustrated when the Lord allows hard times to come against us. Their purpose is not to break you, but to force you to trust the Lord to conquer them. There was a great reason why David was able to stand boldly to the face of a giant twice his size. David knew the Lord, who was greater than a thousand times stronger than Goliath, was standing with him.
How did David learn this? During his time as a shepherd. God was preparing David for great and mighty victories when he was a lowly shepherd boy. It was in the pastures with the sheep that God proved Himself to be faithful to David. Those deliverances from the bear and lion would not have been possible if David had not learned to trust the Lord to deliver. Don’t grieve the hard times in your life right now. God is preparing you for great victories in your humble and lowly state. Don’t despise the days of small things.
The Lord has defeated giants as these in many people’s lives. He will defeat them in your life as well if you will trust Him. God equipped David to kill Goliath way before he would ever face him. Your trials today are much more important than you’ll ever know. God is making you a giant killer at this very moment. It is in the silence where God equips His people. Don’t resist the trials God sends to you. If you’ll learn the lessons now, you’ll know how to kill the giants tomorrow.
