Come Forth as Gold
Daily Devotional for December 19th
Behold, I go forward, but he is not there; and backward, but I cannot perceive him: On the left hand, where he doth work, but I cannot behold him: he hideth himself on the right hand, that I cannot see him: But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold. Job 2:8-9
As Christians, days come in our life when we can not discern why events happen the way they do. There are times, even seasons, when it seems as though uncertainty hovered over us. There are even times when we have questioned if the Lord was with us, or if He had forsaken us. Then after enduring for a time, we realized that He was with us the whole time. These times left us questioning the Lord why He would allow them in our life. We will have times when the Lord is so near while other times when it seems as though He is a thousand miles away.
Job faced one of the most grueling trials ever recorded in the bible. After losing children, wealth, and even his own health, Job was left questioning a lot of things. In our hardest of times, we question why the Lord has allowed certain things to happen. Trials will always do one of two things; they will either deteriorate your faith or purify it. When Job used this imagery of gold, he was telling us that trials are to us the same as a furnace is for gold. The gold is purified in the hottest of conditions because when heated, all impurities in the gold are separated. In your trials, we are either pulled back into trusting in self or something else which is an offense to faith in God, or we will let go of everything else that we’re trusting in, and believe God to see us through.
What about you? Has your faith in God been purified in the midst of troubles, or has your faith been eaten away to nothing? The Lord sees your faith but desires to purify it. Maybe you’re in the midst of something today and wonder why. The Lord desires to remove every other crutch you choose to lean on so that He may be your only hope. The crutch you lean on today will let you down tomorrow. You may not even be able to trust in anything else the next time, but Jesus will always be there. Why not let God purify your faith so that He is the only one or thing left to trust in because, there will be a day when He is the only thing that will be there to trust in. If you do, then you’ll come out of every trial as pure as gold.
